Music App Question

Is there any way to get the stock music app to play in the background while I do other things on the phone?
I think I was able to do this on my old SGS2...Is there a box I need to check?
example: I downloaded a mp3 file from my church to listen to, while playing that file, a text message came thru. I went to answer that text, but the music stopped. I have to restart the file and then drag forward to where it stopped.
a pain in the rear if I am listening to a dj mix or lecture or sermon and go to send an email and have to restart all over again...
if this has been answered, please let me know as I am a novice to android and not trying to clutter the forum with random post...

I tested it out and mine resumed playing after a call and a text. It will stop if you manually pause it but you should be able to resume, after being paused for a longer time it will remove the controls and close the player.

Yeah, I was hoping to have it play in the background vs stop alltogether and resume.
i have another device that I won't name and it does continue to play in the background while you "multi-task"

My S3 plays music in the background with the touchwiz music player. i push play, then home and its plays in the background with controls in the notification tray; even with the screen locked and off; even using the messaging app, etc.
