Help Music stuttering with headphones plugged in

GoOakland

Lurker
If it isnt obvious by posting in this forum, I have a Moto droid Maxx and recently it has been acting really strange with the music.
Whenever I plug in my headphones the music will begin to stutter if the headphone cables are touched the wrong way (Just playing out of the speakers works fine. It's specifically with a headphone jack plugged in). If I do get the music to play OK I have to be certain not to touch the cable or the plug in jack at all or I am for certain going to get an insane amount of stuttering. After a few seconds of stuttering it always ends up pausing and I will have to re click the play button. Sometimes though, it will just skip the stuttering and go straight to pause. Also, sometimes it will completely by pass the headphones and play out the speakers despite the fact that the headphones are plugged in.

I have never had this problem until recently. I'm fairly certain it occurred when I updated to 24.13.3

Originally, I just figured it was a problem with the music app. I was running with Google Play. So I ended up removing the updates to the app (I couldn't figure out how to completely uninstall the app. It seems like it's one of those apps that are just always stuck on the phone) and re downloading the updates. I figured it was as close as a reinstall of the app as I could get. Well, it didn't help.

So I downloaded another app. I got Doubletwist. It works a lot better but it still messes up a lot. So I figure its safe to assume its not app dependent.

After trying to do some research on it I got the impression that it was because of google search/voice. I had noticed that google voice would pop up occasionally during the problems and said it's got to be it! Well, I'm not sure how to resolve that. I've gone into the settings and tried turning off everything that could possibly cause it to flair up... To no avail.

So at this point I really don't know what to do. Ideas?

I'm betting that it's a problem either with the headphone or (more likely) the headphone jack. My headphone jack stopped working right early on and I switched to Bluetooth earbuds.

But the touching the wire to me is a dead giveaway that it's a problem with either the jack or the headphones. Try another pair to rule out the headphones.

I've used multiple different headphones and it acts the same for all of them. I guess that leaves the headphone jack. I'll take some air to it here soon but from just eye ballin it, it doesn't look dirty... looks fairly clear

You know, one more thing to try, to rule out interruptions by a third party app, is to start the phone in safe mode.

Long press power as you would to shut down the phone, but then long press on the power off control until you get a prompt about safe mode.

After restarting the phone in safe mode, see if the stuttering music is fixed.

I'm guessing that your headphone jack is dirty, possibly not something compressed air will clean up. I keep a can of contact cleaner around for things like 'sticky' switches and such. When you're buying some, don't confuse it with spray lubricant, you don't want to lube the jack's internals, you want to clean the metal contacts. Something like this will do:

And don't spray a lot into the jack, it doesn't take much to be effective.
