Its because task killers are not needed on Android. It has its own built-in task manager and most things are meant to be "in memory".

i use them to close apps i don't want running ie maps, yahoo ym etc. its a quick way to kill apps all at once and i like to keep my memory free. i noticed there is always less lag when i clear my memory. i see no harm is using them.

If there is a rogue app, Android still has one will you can "kill" the task, but you got to understand that most automatically start back up.

Task killers are useless, the android os in general work better without them, if you are worried about an app acting up just get watchdog lite, it monitors apps. Let the os do its thing.

I don't want this to turn into a battle at the urinal, but task killers can cause much more harm than good. Just read up on how android was developed to manage multitasking.

Here are a few of my faves:

LauncherPro
Home Switcher for froyo
QuickSettings
NoLED
No Lock
Silent Boot
ASTRO **recently replaced with Root Explorer**
Multicon
Battery Watcher
Animated Widget
Note Everything
Clockr
Titanium backup (root)
MinFreeManager (root)
Quick Reboot (root)
Cache Mate (root)

**SwipePad
**AdFree (root)

Outside of the built in google/android apps:
Launcher Pro
Dialer One
Tasker
Documents to go
Dropbox
Weather Channel
Copilot US

Coming from WM I had a hard time adjusting to the idea that you just leave apps running in the background because WM became dog slow and unstable if you did this. I haven't had a problem with this in android so I just use the phone and let Android manage the apps.

The BEST:
Pulse (the coolest app I've found.. rss feeder)
Plume (twitter client, never used twit until I found this app)
CircleLauncher (very cool! quick widget app launcher)
Clockr (text clock, w/ definable hotlink. color customizable)
GO Launcher (like the original not the EX version)
ES File Explorer (w/ wifi SMB connectivity!)
SlideScreen (very cool... "river" of data)

Very Good:
Barcode Scanner (you must have barcode scanner, this one is good)
Amazon Kindle (great for reading on the go, tons of free classics)
Live Holdem (POKER! very cool)
Flashlight (simple and effective)
GO SMS (best SMS client I've found.. want better though)

Like 'em:
TV Favs (keep up w/ those episodes/schedules.. great for torrents)
Springpad (keeping up w/ todo lists and notes)
AppBrain (find more android apps and track what you have)

What I need (but haven't found yet):

*A better browser than Dolphin HD (lots of cool features but too slow. Use Opera Mini much of the time because it's so fast -- but too limited)

*Much better music/video apps (Android Winamp Beta was disappointing, haven't found anything that can play .flv files saved on my SDCARD)

*Better SMS client

*Can't FREAKIN' believe that no one has been able to come up with a simple screen capture utility that doesn't require a rooted android!!

*All the Flickr clients I've found SUCK MAD BALLS!

*Better GReader client (google's suck, didn't like NewsRob much better - think I'll buy pro version of Pulse)

*Better Del.icio.us client

.... more to come.

I use:

Amazon (barcode scanner works great)
1 Click Cleaner
Dropbox
eFile
Facebook
Foursquare
Green power free
Grooveshark
IMDB
Mashable
Reddit Is Fun
Skyfire (video support is nice)
and Tweetdeck

Obviously not all at the same time. My one big gripe about the Optimus S is that they really don't give you much space on the phone for apps and not everything can be put on the SD card. As an IT guy, it's hard to fight off 'panic mode' when you open a file manager and see "50mb remaining", heh. Although I will say between regular maintenance with 1 Click Cleaner and eFile, it has managed to stay pretty clean and run just as fast as it did out of the box thus far.

Sure beats the hell out of the Motorola VE-240 I was embarassed to own for over a year.

Poweramp is a must have because the stock music player is not very good sound quality, and somebody needs to make an app that boost volume on optimus s.

I agree. I'm flashed to thunderrom which has helped quite a bit but I've got a few apps loaded (secure email/calendar client for work, Copilot US, Yahoo mail, docs to go) that really chew thru the available storage.

I'll have to check out those apps you mentioned... I'm down to 34MB free.

Thanks for the suggestion of Watchdog. This has helped me to extend my battery life from 14 hours to over 70% of battery life left after 14 hours.

I like the following apps, all of which are free, except one:
* Quicksettings (by Sergej Shafarenka): includes WiFi Hotspot, flashlight, quick settings.
* PowerAmp ($4.99, but free to try for 2 weeks): Has equalizer. Can boost sytem volume. Only music player that plays all WMA files and can read all WMA artist tags.
* Ulysse Gizmos: Compass, GPS stats, bubble level, & speedometer.
* MyPhoneExplorer: Let's you sync Microsoft Outlook contacts, calendar, and other folders (like music, photos, etc.) between your PC & phone, and manage your phone's files & folders from a PC over WiFi or USB. (You also must download a free PC app.)
* Google Goggles: Not only scans bar codes, but also QR codes & actual physical objects! (E.g. Take a picture of a coffee machine and it may recognize the exact model based on the image, and then facilitate getting information about it for shopping. Freaking amazing.)
* Lookout Mobile Security: Antivirus and lost-phone finder. Let's you log into a website and remotely ring (siren) your lost/stolen phone at full volume or remotely turn on the GPS and track its location.
* Ultimate Stopwatch. Stopwatch. Countdown timer. Multiple lap times.
* Android Speedometer: Gives max & avg. speed, etc, so fun for skiing, biking, etc. Optionally can display speedometer mirrored onto windshield for driving (i.e. HUD, heads up display).
* Overdrive: For downloading/playing audio books & music from your local library.
* RockPlayer: Plays most video & audio formats-- including SD-based FLVs, MP4, MPG, AVI, WMV.
* Where's My Droid: Let's you locate a lost phone by sending it a secret text message which turns up the volume to maximum and makes it ring, or a text message which makes it text you back a google maps link with its GPS coordinates (which can be amazingly accurate-- like getting you within a few feet of your lost phone if it can see multiple GPS satellites.)
* TiKL: Turns your phone into a walkie-talkie if your friends also have TiKL. Great for skiing, biking, hiking, etc, where you want to insantly talk to one or many with a button-push, not dial & wait for for them to pick up.
* Scanner Radio: Let's you listen to any of hundreds of local police/emergency scanners around the country. Useful if you're stuck in traffic wondering if it's an accident or there's a local emergency, or something.
* QR Droid: Let's you make your own QR codes, which you can then use to easily give people your contact information. You call up the QR image and they scan your screen with their phone's scanner.

Built-in apps: Voice Search, Navigation, SprintTV, and Lattitude (if you want to keep track of where your kids are).

Oh... and I find the phone functionality pretty useful too. You can actually use these Android devices to make and receive phone calls! :-)

My top 10 (no particular order, all great):
1. GO Launcher
2. Cubed (music player)... awesome - search

Update to original post:

It's been a month since last post and the cream as risen to the top as far as apps go. I've tried more than a 100 apps and have had as many as 75 on my phone at one time. I've watched my internal storage hover so low that the phone began misbehaving. Currently running about 60 apps w/ about 25mb of storage remaining.

Miren Browser is easily the best I've found and it's all I use these days -- instead of switching between Opera Mini & Dolphin HD, both of which have been uninstalled. (thanks to gvc for recommending this and ScreenShot)

Really liked SlideScreen, but just couldn't find a way to use it more and could no longer tolerate the hit to storage space. If there was a way to add more sources, I might have been able to make better use of it. Uninstalled.

Updated Go Launcher to EX version after they made more tweaks. It's more stable than original and still my fave launcher.

Simi folder - NO MORE icon clutter on my screens, cool little folder app. Press an icon and get access to any number of apps that I've assigned/categorized to it.

Widgetsoid - customizable, control bar for phone settings, very cool

Droidiris - pulls in pics from customizable search engines to create a wall of images, nice if your looking for or just browsing images

Swipepad - cool app launcher that can be invoked from within other apps

PDF Viewer - it's ok.. need more/better features, but best i've found for free (still looking)

Lookout - Don't know if I really need the antivirus part, but its nice to have anyway. What I really like is the feature set that allows you to lock, erase, and track your phone via gps if it gets lost/stolen.
