Help My android is stuck at "checking..."

Hey guys,

I've just spent like 2-3 hours figuring out my gmail account, and was ready to log in on my old phone(was locked due to too many pattern tries, and it is a Samsung Galaxy S1). When I typed the correct email and password, it popped up a small screen saying: "Checking...". It's been doing this for the last 15-20 minutes, so I guess it's not doing any good?

Try rebooting your device and starting over. You might also go into the application manager and clear the caches of Google/gmail storage and Gmail itself.

Menu > settings > applications > manage applications.

Thanks I can't do this due to the fact the phone is closed till i get the "checking..." box away.. It wont let me log in

edit: tried to reboot, and not let the screen get black.. Nothing new
