My android question!

O.k. maybe I'm just not getting this right but I have an Lg phoenix android under an att&t data plan. I pay 15$ a month for 200 mb of data. If I go over I pay extra, if I don't I think it restarts at 200. That's not the point the point is I mostly use wifi connect at my home/apartment because we have wifi here and whenever I goto coffee shops that offer free wifi I use it. That way I can download apps and games and music whatever. I'm thinking about dropping the 15$ plan because I don't really use it but people are telling me that I won't be able to use the android phone. And that i'll have to use another phone. My mom says that all android phones run on a data plan account but considering that I don't use my data and only use wifi it doesn't make sense. It doesn't make sense considering I'm still going to have the same number and the phone why can't I just use it for the wifi connection without the 15$ a month plan.

Seriously any input on this would be helpful I'll try and explain in more detail what I'm doing, or what's going on.

It's simple. Like it or not, AT&T will not permit a smartphone on their network without a data plan. If they identify a phone as a smartphone and the account does not have the minimum data package it will add it as is outlined in the user agreement. FWIW, Verizon is the same way.

Because the carrier requires you have the data package as part of your plan to use the phone on your account. If you don't use it just look at it as a luxury tax.

Android dont need a data plan to work. In fact, among my classmates, less than 20% of android phone owners have a data plan at all. The data plan requirement is a US carrier restriction.

Exactly and the OP is asking about the restriction on a US carrier. You are correct in saying it isn't needed but in the US if you want an android phone to function like a phone you must pay for the extra, I don't think going to Orange or Telus will help him much as he would need to pay for international roaming at all times
