My Bad experience with ROM's

So today I downloaded cyanogenmod 10.2
When I went into recovery mode I forgot to wipe the cache before installing
so I installed it, but it got stuck on the boot screen, and nothing would fix it.
So I had to factory reset and clear the cache. It works, but now I have no backups. No way of going back to stock. I find this really stupid, because a factory reset is recommended on alot of websites for installing a rom, so why would my backups go away to from resetting? Backups should not go away during a reset.
Cyanogenmod isn't bad, I just wish I had a way to go back to stock if I wanted.

And another thing.
I can't even overclock.
The maximum it will let me go is 1200mhz, and thats stock, and half the reason I got cyanogenmod was to overclock, and it wont even let me do it.

It seems like every step of my rooting experience I've gone 2 steps backward for every step forward.

When you factory reset did you select Clear data from recovery? Maybe you also selected the clear internal storage option, which would delete your backups.

Did you flash the kernel for that rom via ADB and the Mini-SDK?

I'm not really familiar with your device, so I could be way off base here. My apologies. :o

Sometimes things don't go as planned with a new rom, or a kernel flash. I've dealt with my share of ups and downs. I got stuck in Qualcomm driver download mode on my LtEvo when I went for S-off. Talk about getting worked up!

My best advice is to try and go slow, ask a lot of questions. Always do a nandroid backup before anything. I know you lost your backups here, and that is scary the first time it happens, trust me I've been there too. Always remember, if you can get to recovery you'll be ok. :)

There's an option to connect your device storage in recovery, so you can transfer a rom / kernel if needed.

Don't hesitate to post up a question, there's usually someone around to help out.

1) The manufacturer doesn't design the phone to have ROMs flashed to it.

2) When you factory reset, you return the phone to the state it was in when it left the factory, and it didn't have any backups. Which is why you copy the backups to your computer first.

Unfortunately that's user error. Same thing happened to me first ROM flash.Without a clean slate the ROM is going to conflict with the pieces of the previous ROM that were still on the phone.

You should always copy your backups somewhere safe, such as your computer or a cloud account. I realize that doesn't help you know, but its something to keep in mind going forward

You can get back to stock by flashing the stock rom

Overclocking is controlled by the kernel. You'll just need to flash a custom one.

Unfortunately that can happen :(. Thats why its so important to read the instructions posted by the developer, ask questions, and be sure of what you're doing before proceeding with anything in the root world.

Were here to answer questions, don't hesitate to ask :):D

Factory reset in custom recovery really shouldnt have wiped the whole phone (including your backup). You must have told it to.
Its a lesson learned
Make another backup now before playing with kernels

Backups won't go away if they are on a sdcard or somewhere other than phone memory!!! That's the main point of recovery, to restore nandroid backups. I also find it useful to save my .apk's to memory card too, so if I start from scratch in a new custom rom I can find them right away.

Old apps seem to work up to Gingerbread while newer apps seem to work from Ice Cream Sandwich & upwards.

I've also found that the latest custom roms have some bugs, ranging from acceptable to INFURIATING. That's why I gone back to ICS for the time being. Not mentioning any names but some devs have made better versions than others.

It does get better the more you do it & the more you remember the correct procedure ;).

What kitkat roms did you have trouble with mate? I think theyre excellent for my phone anyway.
A standard reset in custom recovery mostly really wipes apps and their data. Everything else on the internal, pics, files including titanium and nandroid are all intact unless you tell recovery to wipe internal sd

btw, i've mentioned it in a few of your threads, but for some reason you don't seem interested....but nexus root toolkit, available from a dude "wug" at xda, will seemlessly take care of alot of what has been ailing you.

for instance, i have the same exact phone as you. with NRT, i was able to flash factory images, that HE provides, to fix the many times i eff'd things up.

you can backup to your own PC, so that if you cludge your phone completely you have something to work with as well.

lastly, because "kernels" confused the hell out of me, i have used this app to overclock on my sprint gnex:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mhuang.overclocking

i ultimately uninstalled it because i found i did not need to overclock to read an epub or play chess.:)
