Help My camera button does not work, any suggestions?

Is the screen "on" (unlocked) while trying to use the camera button? Are you holding it long enough?
 
Yes and yes... I'm thinking it's probably a hardware issue, but I don't really want to get another new phone, re downloading everything isn't that appealing to me. I'm thinking I can get away with not having it, unless I decide to root or something.
 
Came across this in a search:
What SMS app are you using? If you are using Handcent SMS, check your settings. There is an option that will allow you to use your camera button as a trigger.

EDIT: its under send message settings
 
You can also set the home button to open the camera when you double tap it. If you are not using it for something else of course.
 
I'm having the same problem with the red (physical) camera button not working. It seemed to have quit working after the last GB update. I can still take pics with the on screen button.
I have handcent and tried JB in AZ advice and it still doesn't work. I also tried clearing cache.

Any advice?
