My Evo Thoughts & Review

Hey Mr Open
Thanks for the Chitown updates...I'm a fitness trainer and work and live near loop.
IF during your lunch or whatever I could play around with it I'd be grateful..pick up your lunch too !
MY. big thing is to what extent 4 G is maintained here...mainly cause Sprint 3g will be a significant step BACK compared to the average 1.5-2.0Mg I get on my nexus.
Anyway lemme know bout that lunch LOL.

Yeah, that's an interesting point. When I can get a 3G signal on my iPhone, it's been pretty snappy lately. I've been hitting about 2.4 lately in some areas. I likely won't leave the Evo's 4G switch on a lot, to manage the battery. For standard 3G usage, I guess I'm sacrificing a bit. Again though, half the time my iPhone drops down to Edge anyway, so I guess i'd be doing better than that.

I presume you're referring to the size? I'm 5'5" and have small Asian hands and have no issues with it.

I was tempted to photoshop some Asian onto him, but didn't want to get yelled at :D

Thanks, that's reassuring. I don't know that I'll use it like that to see the same kind of drop but I want to have explanations ready for the lazy family members who rely on me to tell them what to do. I guess I'll just be ready to charge the thing every chance I get (in the car, at my desk, whatever) which is something I don't need to do now. There's no harm in charging in the car and using the phone at the same time right? Bluetooth for calls...Nav...things like that?

You can happily charge and use at the same time.

Another solution is just get some spare batteries. I have 3 for my Hero, and use all three in a day.

I'm in the same boat. I work in the Wrigley building, near Michigan Ave. and the river. My iPhone is mostly stuck on Edge throughout the day. And I can barely have a conversation without distortion. I've been nervous about moving to Sprint, but it can't get any worse, right?

I work in the BASEMENT of a building in the north loop. Everyone who has worked there for at least a couple of years has Sprint because its the only carrier that works. And it works well. Have no worries. It's one of the main reasons I'm so stoked about this phone. Because I know I'm gonna get an excellent 3G connection at the very least.

G'morning all.

Figured I'd continue documenting my battery usage/drain experiences here.

This morning, when I started my commute, I ran into a strange issue. MP3's would NOT PLAY!! I would get this "unable to play this audio format" error message. I even tried MP3s that I had successfully played the evening prior.

Not wanting to waste my time on that, I fired up Pandora for the first time instead. Figured I'd just test 3G streaming usage. I had 99% battery when I left this morning and about... 110 minutes later, I'm at 62%. For the last 40 minutes of my commute, I also surfed and generally messed around with the phone, so the screen was on that whole time.

Over 3G, the only time I ever dropped was entering Union Station underneath I-290, which is a known dead spot for ALL carriers.

Here's my battery stats for the curious:
Up time: 1:57:32
Awake time: 1:39:05

Android System 40%
Cell Standby 17%
Bluetooth 14%
Display 12%
Phone Idle 9%
Mediaserver 4%
Android OS 2%
Mail 2%

Oh yes, when I dropped Pandora, I decided to try my MP3s again on a whim, and it worked! No clue why - need to research this.

keep it up my man :) You give the most details for us newbie's to Android :) I learn every day! :D

*mutters* still owe me screens :P

Well, just got my Zagg and installed it a short while ago.

I bought the full cover, but it only has two pieces that cover the front screen and the battery panel. I think it's Ghost Armor, that has additional cutouts to cover the edges all around the sides, which Zagg lacks.

The Zagg package came with the front & back, a nice rubber applicator card, and a small spray bottle of alcohol.

Installing it was pretty easy. I've done this a number of times and what I've found is that the key is to keep everything wet constantly... your fingertips, the screen protector on both sides, and the Evo itself.

Because of how "tight" the fit in from top to bottom, I actually goofed a few times where I thought I was aligned at one end, but then the other end would hang off. From side to side, there's actually a small 1-2mm gap.

The screen is still very responsive with the protector on. It feels good and smooth and not too rubbery/sticky at all.

Is it the BEST one I've ever used? No, but it's still a good one for sure.

Kind of a bummer on Zagg's part. Considering that this thing has a kickstand and might actually be on its side more than most phones, the lack of side coverage on at least the side making contact with the supporting surface makes Zagg's protectors non-ideal.

Apparently the FULL Zagg protector has side elements too. I ordered the front & back "easy install" which lacks it. Wasn't really clear on their website but I'm okay with it.

I like the Zagg (or any thin film) shield because of how thin they are. I dislike them becasue after 6 months it starts to peel away on the important areas. I've had this new iPhone since last year. I put the full Zagg shield on it. First warning is: TAKE YOUR TIME! I spent 10 minutes doing it and I should have spent 20. One tiny miscalculation on the placement and it will peel away easily because one side will over fit and leave room to get snagged. .25mm is enough. Also I'd suggest replacing every 6-8 months because wear and tear on the edges eventually make the glue unstick and the pieces are then too easy to peel off. It won't rip away, you have to cut.

I really like the shield because it doesn't add any bulk and when I took it off last night after close to a year the screen and back are PERFECT. My advice: Take the extra time it takes to put it on perfect it WILL pay off. 20 minutes is worth 1 year of protection. Also be prepared to redo the shield after a year.
