My Files questions

Rgarner

Android Expert
Is there a way to get photos to scroll from the bottom instead of the top? Sometimes I want to be able to work in that direction, but not always. Also, is it possible to get it to display the photos larger? I usually have to go through and check each one by clicking on it to find out what it is.

The primary function of the My Files app is to be a basic file manager, it's not necessarily a photo manager app. A file manager is used to manage files and folders (move, copy, delete, etc.), while something like a photo manager will have more features focused on interacting with your photo library. There's some overlap in some functionality between the two, but you might find it to be less of a hassle to use each for what they're intended be used for.

True, it's not the best for looking at photos but I use it for managing them. I just want to make IT more manageable. I dislike having to start at the top every time when it might sometimes be more convenient to begin at the bottom. I hope there's a way to do that.

Well if you want to intentionally re-purpose an app's functionality to do things it's not specifically intended to do, you'll probably have better results using a third-party file manager. The feature set in the My Files app is by design not very extensive, it's supposed to be a basic file manager with capabilities to meet the needs of most users (But it does sound like you're just using it as is and haven't delved into the Settings menu of My Files either). If you want a file manager with more functionality, there are plenty of really viable options available in the Play Store, as most third-party file manager apps will have a lot more options in their settings menus giving you the option to tweak general appearance and functionality more to what you want.

Jumping in to ask: why do none of my Android devices have this "My Files" app? I've never seen or heard of it, except here. I'm talking about rooted and non-rooted devices, including a new Moto Z² Force Edition. No such creature is on this phone, nor on my Moto X 2nd Generation which I'm still using.

I currently use ES File Explorer Pro and Astro File Manager, but I'm just wondering why I've never seen the default(?) file manager.

The My Files app is what Samsung puts on its devices. Been around for years now. It's a solid but basic file manager, most Samsung owners aren't even aware they have it.

Thanks. Nowhere in this thread, until this, was Samsung mentioned at all. Hence my confusion, since I've never used Samsung!

I have "File Manager" and "File Browser" on my LG. Both appear to be system apps. I wonder why LG included 2 basic file managers?

If I recall correctly, Android AOSP does not include any file manager/browser. These are basic things the manufacturers have thrown on their phones since Eclair(?). I know my first few Android phones (a Nexus One and a Samsung Galaxy without a number) had no file capabilities and you had to download Astro or ES from the "market".

The title of the thread refers to My Files, the assumption being it's a query about the My Files app, the thread being diverted to the Samsung issue.
Not unlike if someone creates a posting on WhatsApp, where Facebook, its owner, may or may not even be relative to the question itself.
