my first Android phone: MyTouch 3G?

I'm a happy T-mobile customer and I'm considering ordering a MyTouch 3G as my first foray into the Android experience. Usability issues would obviously be my first concern, but I'm also interested in:

- connectivity with Linux (as I don't use Windows)
- reasonable target platform for some light Android coding

Also, does anyone here use a small external physical keyboard with this device?

I use Ubuntu and the myTouch flawlessly integrates with it. I don't use an external keyboard but have never had any issues with the onscreen keyboard.
