Help My Galaxy Note III occasionally turns off/bricks itself. Any reason why?

Not certain if anyone else has reported this problem...

Have had my Note III for almost a year (bought it on release date)

Recently, I find that it suddenly turns itself off.

It actually "bricks" the phone in that it not only shuts itself down, but you can't reboot it using the buttons on the phone. The phone is completely dead...

...that is, until you pop open the back and remove then reinsert the battery.

At that point the phone reboots and all is fine.

Any reason why it would be doing this?

Roger,

I would *think* not only because I keep the back cover closed and the phone is in a Seidio Case.

Who knows. This is certainly an odd thing happening and was hoping someone would be able to relate to it.

Yeah, Note II. My bad.

Won't factory reset erase everything? I don't know if I want to go that route for something that happens on occasion (but rather regularly)

Well... my guess was that its a software problem... possibly a rogue app. and pulling the battery essentially starts without that app running.

Now as you have a backup of all your data (you do have a backup don't you... if you don't then stop reading this sentence right now and make sure you do), all your contacts email etc is in google.. your apps are in appstores ready for reboots etc... then a reset will rule out hardware problems, (or indicate that it isn't software in which case you can make a warranty claim).

Isn't that obvious? Your N2 is p!ssed you refer to it as N3, thinking you going to replace it soon :D

I'm also inclined to think it might be something battery related. Not necessary the connector, but battery itself. Are you still using original OEM Sammy battery? When you remove, have you noticed any bulging or changes in shape? Easy way to check if you put it on a flat surface and see if it wobbles. If you don't have a fancy setup of your screens customized with a lot of widgets that took you days to tweak (speaking from personal experience), backing everything up and doing factory reset might not be a bad idea. Otherwise, get a replacement battery like from Anker or Hyperion (do NOT buy anything from ebay) and see if the problem goes away. These batteries have natural aging and wear'n'tear even from all the phone shaking can play a role.

I will check that battery out today.

...and yes, unfortunately, I have the phone customized and tweaked to death so a total factory reset would be a huge PITA.

However, if that's what I have to do...

First, I will look over your suggestions. I thank you so much for the advice.

You never said whether you were rooted or not, but if you are rooted you can do a Nandroid backup and then do a factory reset and get back to where you were very quickly. Of course, if it is a rogue app, then you'll just be putting the bad character right back on the phone.

I've had this same thing happen to me twice since I got the phone a few months ago. It has only happened those two times in the last several weeks. I have an unrooted phone.

Also check if your phone has the insane chip, that could be the issue too !
