Help My GS3 and micro USB chargers

tmccaw21

Lurker
So I will start by saying overall, I love my GS3. It's the best phone overall I have had especially when it comes to apps, the user features, and capabilities. My service (calls) is shoddy, especially in my house which must be a dead zone but everywhere else its fine (verizon). However, even with all the great features and functionability of the phone for apps and games, the daily frustration I face when trying to charge this thing makes me want to just crush it with a hammer. I'm on my second GS3. I bought the first one literally the day it was released by Verizon back 2 summers ago. By about April of last year, I could barely use it because every single charger I tried wouldn't work. I had to have the phone positioned perfectly with the cable angled in some manner or another. I got Verizon to replace under a warranty claim after fearing they would screw me and charge me the full retail price like I had heard in some horror stories from other users with the same issue when Verizon said it was user fault. thankfully I was never charged for it. My replacement actually began having similar issues within a couple months and it has steadily progressed to where my first one was with the difficulties.

I have tried dozens of chargers from various companies. Sometimes, I can plug it in and it works flawlessly and charges very quickly. Other times, it takes 12 hours to get a 30% charge. Sometimes a charger won't work at all no matter how I position the phone and charging cable and other times it plugs and goes with no effort at all. Other issues I have had, especially on the first GS3 I had include the little "beep" sound when its first plugged into a charger, well it basically beeps constantly as if i am rapidly plugging and unplugging the phone. I have gotten so frustrated with it and not being able to move onto something else because of these ridiculous 2 year contracts I have considered going back to basic phones altogether and just sacrificing the pleasures of a "smartphone."

To get to my actual "question" I guess, I am looking to see how common these issues are with all smart phone users, not just GS3 phones? Am I doing something wrong with mine? Am I just having bad luck? I really would love to keep using smart phones but I don't want to sign myself up to another 2 year death contract and being stuck with another nightmare of a phone that won't charge so does anyone have any advice for other manufacturers or devices that they can confidently say plugs in and charges without issue even 12 months after purchase? Or does anyone have any advice in general about getting my phone to charge without issue? I feel I have tried everything. I've been so close almost every week to taking it back to Verizon and screaming at someone but after a long week of work, I never feel like dealing with the hassle again. I guess I believe the issue is either with Samsung's USB port design or the micro usb for charging is just a plain bad idea in general that we are all forced to deal with now until we go to iphones (yuck) or a basic phone that is just plain built more ruggedly.

Hey man. I feel your pain but i have nothing to offer other than samsung phones are VERY fussy about chargers :(
Are you having problems even with a new samsung charger?

If it's doing the rapid plugging/unplugging thing, that's usually a short in the charge port. Try using a can of compressed air on the port directly. Might clear things up, as there may some residual stuff connecting the leads together.

ive been through the charger that came with my droid incredible, a motorola micro usb charger, and now am using a $4 cable from Frys electronics as my daytime/random time charger. this cheap cable has worked well so far. i went through the angling of the phone thing with the old droid cables, but they were well used and worn.

i use the oem sammy charger as my overnight charger.

The charging port went bad in 2 Samsung Transform Ultras both my wife and I have. The charging port in her new LG F7 is starting to give her issues. One of the main reasons I picked up the S3 was for its wireless charging capability. I keep a charging pad on my desk at work and one at home. I haven't plugged my phone into a cable in months now I highly recommend it. I got my wireless receiver from Amazon. It just sits on top the battery and uses the original battery cover. The phone still fits in my otterbox defender just fine. I picked up a Nokia wireless charging pad from AT&T while they were on-sale. Total cost about $65 for everything and worth every penny considering micro-usb is garbage and destined to fail.

I think I will try out the wireless charging pad, especially if you say that I can still use my otterbox with it. I haven't had the original Samsung charger in a long time since it was stolen by one of my co-workers soon after I got the phone. I have been using a Best Buy "rocket" brand charger that works well about 70% of the time but it still sometimes won't charge at all. I think the micro USB design is just flawed. If I'm not mistaken, I thought Congress or some entity passed a law saying that all chargers for phones had to now be universal so that companies couldn't charge ridiculous prices for chargers (they are still ridiculously priced). I guess the final design choice was micro usb since all phones use it except iphone.

What charging pad do you use for the GS3 from Amazon? I'd like one that would allow me to keep my Otterbox commuter case

This isn't the exact receiver I'm using (I can't find it) but it looks like it:

NEW Qi wireless Charger receiver pad for Samsung Galaxy S3 S9300 (Receiver only):Amazon:Electronics

I'm using a Nokia DT-900.

I also used a generic one for a little while and it worked fine but I didn't like it, it beeped a lot which was annoying but it worked with my Otterbox fine. The Nokia doesn't make any sounds it just has a charging LED. I really don't think it matters though what one you get as long as it's a QI charging pad.

http://androidforums.com/samsung-ga...3/832491-usb-cables-charging-time.htmlhargers need to be at least especially USB type NEED to be at 2 amps to charge. A kindlle charger will work. Lifehacker just had a article which talked about the wire gauge needed to be a certain type. 1.5 amps will only keep charged. The rocketfish charger works great but buy the right angle adapter if you don't the charger loses its effectiveness. I ended up tossing thatone. The other person is correct about the chargers; my original s3 could use ANY charger, broke my screen and got a refurbished one and its tempermental with what charger I use. I have afew chargers that are laying about.
There is another thread about USB chargers further down on this forumn

Another user said it didn't work well with the Otterbox. But I'm happy to hear someone else say that it does. Does the charging just take longer? I have mine in an Otterbox Defender and that's a case that no one wants to continually have to remove to charge their phone.

Please re-confirm!

Thanks!

Yes I have the Otterbox Defender in real tree camo. :)

It works fine. It was a little bit of a tight fit since the receiver makes the battery cover bulge a little but it fits and I've been using it every day since September to charge my phone. It takes around 4 and a half hours from completely dead to fully charge.

Thanks Mydian!

I ended up as a last ditch effort just trying to blow the port out with canned air. I also bought a new "Rocketfish" wall charger from Best Buy and amazingly enough, I've had good luck on the last 2 charges. So, possibly it was just "fluff" in my port!! Fingers crossed that's all it was/is!

I have never had any issue with the charging port on my SGS3. I have used many different USB chargers to charge my phone. The three I use on a regular basis is the regular Samsung charger that came with the phone. I also have a generic car charger I use a few times a week. At work, I have a BlackBerry charger. I carry an HTC charger with me in my car in case I need to charge my phone at a friend's place and he only uses iPhones. I have two Nokia chargers at home as well, one a wall charger and the other is a USB to micro-USB cable that I can use via my PC.

On my old HTC phone, I did have a problem with the battery. It would take forever to charge and would drain unusually quickly. The battery started to bulge which is a sure sign of a problem with the battery. You may want to just open up your phone and check that the battery is still OK. If it is bulging, you should replace the battery.

Turns out, it's still doing it. It does it more on some chargers than others. The Rocketfish Best Buy charger gives it the least issues. I've since reset the cache partition to see if that helps. Currently charging it up to 100% to see if it makes a difference. I also ordered a new battery, but I can't find the EXACT battery that came in the Samsung.. they all seem like Samsung knockoff's. I'm waiting for that to arrive in hopes it's a good one and not one that's already bad.

Stuntman.. As you, I've never had an issue with various chargers and have always used different ones with no issues. This just started happening about a week or so ago.. all of a sudden. Nothing happened to the phone that would make it start doing this out of the blue. Very strange.
