Help My HTC desire hacked?

Had an android for nearly a year now and had no problems whatsoever.
Today however I received a sms message this morning saying "Lawrence (my name) Do you know how easy it is to hack a Htc from another Htc?" This appeared as if sent from my own number, I thought it was odd but ignored it.

later in the day collegues of mine showed me sms messages appearing from my number sent to them with non sense messages such as "the weather in america can only be appreciated though a telescope"
"A pigeon flies east to carry its apples" ect ect

I rang my service provider to ask about this strange activity and if they could see this or not they claim they can only see activity after a day so they couldn't tell me. They recommended I did a wipe/reset on the handset which I have done. I wiped both the handset and the SD card.
However a few hours later someone else in my phone book received a similar stupid message.

What the hell is going on? How can this still be happening after a full wipe/reset?

Thanks!

Most likely because your phone wasn't hacked at all. Someone is spoofing your number. Most likely someone you know who is messing with you.

Thats what I thought as its only work colleagues who have shown me these messages haven't had any replies from other non people in my phone book? How could they be doing this though, how can they just appear as my number? I also received a message with random symbols and the numbers from lost (TV show) in it. This appeared to be from nobody has no sender?

How can I be sure? How can I seek revenge? :D

To be sure, turn off your phone for a couple of hours. If any more messages are sent during that time, then it definitely isn't coming from your phone. Regardless of the seemingly benign and silly messages, whoever is doing it is breaking the law. I'd first report it to your carrier (and try and get copies of the messages your co-workers have received) and then I'd contact the police. A permanent criminal record (or the fear of one) might be satisfying enough.

Thanks lunatic,

good advice. Won't involve the police at this stage as I have pulled a few nasty pranks in the past my self, however I am better at playing pranks than being on the end of them :)! I was initially concerned but now I just want to try figure it out for myself so I could seek revenge without them knowing I knew!

I am still slightly worried I may be racking up text charges!

turned out to be somebody using a website that allows you to use whatever from and to fields you please had nothing to do with my android. Can't believe I wiped my handset because of it!

Just wanted to come back and say your were spot on Lunatic thanks
