Help my memory is corrupted and can't factory reset

hi. I'm having troubles with my HTC Detail. I started getting popups that says, "The application *blank* has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." After I press force close, many more popups appear with the same message for different applications. Also, the music I stored would randomly disappear. To solve this I tried doing a factory reset, but the HTC logo appears and stays that way forever until the batteries die. When i turn it back on it always brings me back to the same point. I don't know what to do. I'm also a tech novice so when I looked up similar problems I was unable to understand some of the instructions. Please help.
 
I don't own the detail, and but this should work. With the phone powered down (like after a battery pull) hold the volume down button and press the power button. You should eventually see a menu, choose clear storage using the volume keys and press power to select. Good luck!
 
Well when i hit volume down and power, i have the option to select fastboot, recovery, factory reset, simlock, and image crc. i've tried doing factory reset through this screen, but the same thing would happen. HTC logo would show forever until batteries died.
