my note 2 "has been modified" but i did not root it

My note 2 GT-N7100 international, 4.1.2. Never tooted my phone or attempted to. However, today I was checking for software update and I got the message: "Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available". I also noticed a red light next to the ear piece that was not there before. Would appreciate the help in figuring this out and solving the issue.
 
Do you have the "allow apps not from Google Play Store" checked off in the settings menu?

You may have an app installed that is triggering that.
