Root My Personal ROM Thoughts

keyd

Newbie
I've now tried both MildWild's OX based rom and the dGB rom.

While I really like the emptiness of dGB I'm finding the lack of predictive text a problem. Also hate not having a clock on my main home screen, tried to port in the mildwild widget but I don't get the one I wanted.

The camera on dGB is really good, has all the cool photo effects I can play with for fun.
I hate the contacts, I keep all my contacts on SIM and dGB (nor mildwild) allow for that and you have to import them (then lose numbers when you flash and forget that fact)

I think Mildwild is going to be my ROM of choice. I'd have liked to try CM7 but it seems I need to flash the radio and I'm not comfortable about going that far with the flashing process.

You don't need a radio for CM. If you have a froyo radio (Which you will have) Then its going to be fine.

AOSP ROMs dont like SIM contacts. SIM contacts are very limited. Is there a reason you don't like having your contacts as google contacts? Theres no malicious intent from google. They're safe and protected. You'll have the same issue with CM contacts. Infact, dGB uses CM contacts.

You'll find there is no predictive text in dGB as you are not supposed to use the stock keyboard. That is a cut down version designed only to sign in if you have done a factory reset. The idea is you install your own keyboard. Either the HTC IME mod or any number of options from the Market.

I used to use my own HTC IME Themed keyboard, which you can get from the apk's section of this thread:

http://androidforums.com/desire-all...oads-root-users-updated-22nd-july-2011-a.html

Just dont forget to start at the end of the thread to locate the password needed.

The same goes for the launcher. They are designed to be a fallback for if you have to factory reset. Thats all.

Thanks for response SURoot good to know the answer to the radio thing.

As for google contacts, google are not exactly renowned for their privacy or data protection and I'd rather keep as many ways as possible to keep data out of their hands. Its bad enough they grab info from everywhere else including while driving the streets jumping on peoples wireless connections and using that data.
May sound a tad extreme but as a society we are having our privacy eroded left right and center and I am not someone who goes around making all my details freely available.

I must admit I didn't realise I was supposed to install a keyboard and launcher onto the ROM. I'm too new at this stuff. What launcher can you recommend and I may retry dGB again?

There are a lot of launchers out there - there's a thread in Android Applications called something like "The big list of launchers".

I used Go Launcher for a long time. At the moment I'm trying Holo Launcher, which is smaller, has most of the features and does a couple of things slightly differently (can make folders on screen or in dock ICS style by just dragging icons on top of each other, though I still use Folder Organizer instead). Most are free, or have free versions, so you can try a few & see what you like.

I'm giving it a go now, not too shabby. The newer Go Launcher releases seemed to be that bit too taxing on my Desire for it to run flawlessly. This is quite a refreshing change too.

You can download older versions of Go Launcher from their blog. I did that when v3 came out and I decided that every change they'd made was a downgrade as far as I was concerned.

Yeah, I'm just a lazy person! I fancied a change as I was getting tad bored so no rush to go back yet. I've only got approximately 8 weeks before I upgrade. I can't wait now!

Thanks for the heads up on this one Hadron. I switched to Halo Launcher (from Go Launcher EX) a few days ago & like it very much. I will continue to use the free version for a while but may buy the plus version in due course to take advantage of the notifications & additional transitions.

hi all,

i use Go launcher - but will check out Holo ;)
Widget locker for lock screen
Contapps for fave contacts

all works well and looks nice imo

cheers

oooh liking holo launcher - removed Go to save on space - see how it goes

shame there isnt a swipe up for shortcut option

Only negative thing I've read about Holo is the frame rate is a bit slower and it can be stuttery on Gingerbread due to the dithering down from ICS.

yeah i guess it isnt quite as smooth as GO - but it is very close - i dont have any issues with it

For me, redux 1.2, Holo Launcher, Holo Locker, SlideIT keyboard and Button Savior (with its customiseable gestures) really bring the desire up to date.

still zm oxy and holo for me :) was almost going ics ....but much work to do as on cm7r2 hboot and dont have ext part sd yet :/ ......so leaving it for now at least

Still with Zm Dan? I tried another rom after, Sony Xperia themed.. It's just a less polished Mildwild so I wasn't amazingly bothered by it. As I upgrade next week I changed my hboot and put dGB back on. Still my favourite :D!
Holo is a good launcher but I switch between that and an older, and more stable, Go Launcher. They are both pretty solid so I swap when I feel the need to.

I've not had any significant instability with Holo. Some bits of Go are more polished, but it was feeling increasingly bloated to me, so I'm happy with the change.

hi Hadron,

yeah, 10mb! :o thats too much for a launcher - holo pretty much does it all for about 9mb less :D .....and the dev added swipe for app shortcuts for me - so cool :)

Ah! I see the ambiguity in my post regarding Holo being unstable! I merely meant the older version of Go Launcher is more stable than the newer ones! :p

thanks Jon :) yes it looks v cool imo ....but too late - ive just flash miui xj :D will see if ive got a screen hanging around somewhere
