Help My phone apparently thinks I'm in England

My LG G3 has Android 5.1.1 . Recently, I noticed that the dates on my Google Calendar app on my G3 show dates in "European" format (DD/MM/YY or similar) instead of "American" format (MM/DD/YY or similar). I don't know why. Also, all my Google Now news stories come from the BBC, and other British sources. I live on the US east coast, and have lived here for 17 years. I've never BEEN to the UK, or to Europe.

In the phone's main settings, under date and time, there's no option available to change the date format, and I can't find a way to make Google Now show me American news sources. I've also noticed "British" spelling on some words. "Customise" instead of "customize", for example. I'm thinking the 2 problems are somehow related, but can't figure this thing out.

The date format on the web version of Google Calendar is the way I want it, but on the app on the phone, no such luck. The time zone setting both for the web based and app versions of Google Calendar are set to Eastern time, as they should be.

At the suggestion of the support person at Verizon, I tried putting the phone into safe mode, and nothing changed. So I don't think it's being caused by an app, but I could be wrong. I have submitted "feedback" to Google through the Google Now menu, but I'm not sure I'll get a response from them. I don't know if this is a problem caused by the upgrade to 5.1.1 that was downloaded within the last few months, or something else.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I made the change as you suggested. No joy. 3 BBC stories and a Daily Mail story. Also, at the bottom, Google Now has a card telling me if I want location based cards, I should turn on high accuracy or battery-saving location mode. And, Google Calendar (app) still shows the "European" format.

Google Now knows where "home" and "work" are (Outer Banks of NC locations), and always has, and correctly shows me travel time to get from one to the other. But it still insists on only showing me British news.

I changed the location settings to the battery-saving mode, and Google had me confirm that I wanted it to be able to read my location. I agreed, then I changed the location settings to high accuracy again. Maybe I should have left it the way you suggested overnight or something, to give it more time to adjust?
