My phone has locked up twice now where I had to do force reboot. Why has it started doing this? and how do you fix it?

Did you Wipe Cache Partition deleting all temporary data and not touching permanent data, settings, or installed apps? It can become contaminated over time.

I Wipe Cache Partition on my Droid Turbo 2 every Saturday.

MOTO G - wipe the cache partition:

1. With the phone powered off, press the VOL DOWN KEY for 2-3 seconds then POWER key then release.
2. The device will display different BOOT OPTIONS.
3. Use the VOL DOWN Key to SCROLL to Recovery and VOL UP Key to select.
4. The device will display the Motorola logo and then the Android in distress (logo with Exclamation mark).
5a. KITKAT: Press and hold the VOL UP key for 10-15 seconds. While still holding the VOL UP key tap and release the POWER key.
5b. LOLLIPOP: Press and keep holding POWER button for 2-3 seconds, then press and release VOL UP button, then release the POWER button.
Tip: You can try this step, holding the phone in landscape. If you are stuck on step 6, try a force reboot by pressing the Power key and VOL DOWN key, and start the process again.
6. Phone will display menu options, use the VOL DOWN Key to scroll to wipe cache partition and the POWER Key to select this option
8. The device will then perform the partition wipe and reboot.

It removes all temporary files and doesn't touch any permanent files, settings. or apps.

On the Turbo it took 7 min to run to completion. On the Turbo 2 it takes 1 sec to run to completion. You have to wait until it is done.

The answer to that question is a book. There is not a ready answer. It all depends on the user.

For a Factory Data Reset ... I backup/restore four directories using my desktop computer, re-install all apps from Play Store, use the backup/restore facilities in Nova Launcher Prime, Pixel Phone Pro, and Tasker.

It will remove all apps you added and all settings you have made. It will also do a Wipe Cache Partition.

The best approach to problem determination ...
Wipe Cache Partition.
If problem persists ... start phone in Safe Mode.
If problem goes away it is caused by an app that you added.
If problem persists ... Factory Data Reset and possible hardware replacement.

All this assumes the device is no root-ed.
