Help My Samsung Galaxy phone doesn't like Samsung Kies

Hi!

I have the Samsung Galaxy II and I am having a great deal of trouble gettting it to sync with my computer via Samsun Kies. I want to be able to plug it in, have it update with my new music and back up my files/pics/videos and do this quickly but at the moment it is taking hours. Kies keeps freezing or telling me I need to update the emergency firmware - which I do, but it also takes hours if it ever finishes.

So at the moment, the last time I logged it in it decided to double up all my music and now every time I go to try and play music like normal on my phone is says there is insufficient memory...GAH!

Does anyone have any tips on what to do/how to fix this? please? I am not very tech savy so this phone is killing me! :)

Any help is appreciated!!!

Do not use Kies! Use Windows Explorer instead. it's much easier and reliable. Make sure the phone is set to: -
Settings/Wireless and Network/USB settings/Mass Storage
Plug in to PC, open Windows Explorer and all is revealed. use it like any other drive.

Thanks
I have 2 questions :)
1. how do you get updates in the firmware if it does not sync and do it through kies?
2. How do you back it up - just drag across the folders everytime you plug it in?

Kies is pants. Full stop.
All you can do is hope the next release from samsung will be the holy grail.
Tip: Do not rely on "check for updates" in Kies itself. This will only invoke on an actual version number change. Samsung update kies quite frequently WITHOUT bumping up the version number.
So, log into the samsung website every few days or so to check manually.
For example, the current version is 2.0.31182_152_4 (Sept 29th) This means this is the FOURTH version of 2.0.31182_152, so its worth a manual check

I only update Kies purely for the drivers, nothing else. I dont bother backing up/synching/updating firmware with it because it is so terrible.

To make sure your on the latest firmware is a matter of taste, but personally, I browse here and on XDA and if its apparent there is a later firmware available, i then decide if if i want to apply it or not. So its down to YOU and not kies, so your in full control. Also by going the Odin route will mean you can then decide on if you want to keep your carrier specific bloatware or not. Its ALL up to you.

I know rooting is a bit of a taboo for a lot of people, but it really IS the way to go. Once rooted you can back up your entire system, so if you do something untoward and "break" your device, as long as you can boot up into recovery mode, you will be able to go back to a previous backup and EVERYTHING will be exactly the same at the point the backup was taken.

The only downside of not going through Kies is that it invalidates your warranty, but if you do need to send your handset back, you MAY be able to put original firmware back on and get away with it. Its somewhat of a grey area.
