My wife's sgs5 kills home wifi

JMichael

Lurker
But my sgs5 doesn't, nor does her Nook (occasional use), nor does my Kindle Fire (late nite use only), nor does her HP Pavillion (frequent use), nor does my HP Chromebook (frequent use), nor does her Verizon Ellipsis 7 (frequent use), nor does my Vizio (occasionally on Netflix).... I am unfortunate to only have DSL, so my down speeds are only satisfactory, however they are fairly consistent. With everything else off, when my phone is connected to our network, things are cool. Soon as I kick on her wifi, the download speeds shrink to a declmal mbps.

My provider installed a new modem/router last week. All checked out. Moved the channel to 6 from channel 1. With every other device on the network, things are nice. Switch her wifi on, and things go to crap.

I have turned off a pile of the garbage apps that came with the phone. I have both phones set to static vs. dhcp, and tried all combinations between both phones. Neither phone auto updates apps. From everything I can see, both phones are set up the same.

About the only thing I haven't done with her phone is do a reset. If I restart her phone, the network is fine for 30 mins or so, then slooooooooows down to a crawl. I'm at the end of my wits.

Any suggestions? Sorely would appreciate any hints, tricks, or insights.

Thanks!

Ok this is going to seem like a stupid question, but are you certain you have not assigned both phones the same IP in your router? I mean if you look at this from a networking perspective, unless she has an app installed that is hammering the network, it must be either a defective piece of hardware (802.11 radio in the phone) or a config issue.

Ah, if it were that simple....no, the phones have different IP addresses.....

Just to be sure, I looked. I've come to the same conclusions you did: either an app has gone renegade, or I gotta take the phone back to Verizon. That sucks. I suspected Facebook, since she checks it a couple (!) times a day. But I uninstalled/reinstalled, went into settings and unchecked all the automatic crap, and still the same problem.

We are still going to be at less than half of our data plan, even with her on 4g, but its the principle of the thing. Got a perfectly good network here, and have to use 4g for her. Creeps me out!

Thanks so much for the thought, though. Appreciate it.

if there are a lot of photos on the phone and you have google photos to sync when connected to wifi, it could just be hogging the bandwidth syncing all the photos. if your dsl has a poor upload which most do this could take time to sync.

Hmmm....... The phone is essentially new, I know she's taken some pix, but hasn't gone nuts so far.

You are right about the upload speed: it's a half mg or less. The upload side of the equation never bothered me, it was the download side that always gave me fits. I have to chew on that one awhile....

Meanwhile, I have to take the wife to Dr. this afternoon, and will be driving right by Verizon store. Think we'll have a chat, not holding my breath though for a quick solution. Thanks.

Going to say this is more likely to be an issue with your upload bandwidth at home. .5Mb is pretty slow these days, and if you are using all of it, you will begin to experiencing lag on your download side as well.

See what apps are using all that data by going into settings and under data usage and look at usage by apps.

Ok Ok Ok

You guys got me thinking.... Grabbed her phone and looked at her data usage on wifi. Next under android OS, was Cloud. WTF. I went into cloud settings and saw that her phone was set to back up EVERYTHING every hour. EVERYTHING. Yeah her phone had only a few photos, but the SD card had a billion or more. I changed the settings to only backup contacts and msgs, only at night, only on wifi (which it had been set to).

I had seen Cloud as big data user, but couldn't figure out what was up. I think that when the hourly backup of all her stuff kicked in, it choked the network. Make sense?

So, the next couple of hours will tell. Right now the wifi network seems stable and all is working. Thanks Dcap and Solapathy, I think you might have put me on the right track. will post my results later in the day.

Thanks so much!

My galaxy s4 was hot as hell one day and the battery was draining really fast.I realized that all my photos were being backed up and I have tons of photos on my 64 gig sd. Needless to say I went under account setting and unsynced all but what I want in the cloud. Personaly I do not want my photos on googles backup. Thats what my pc and external drives are for.

Well, everything seems to be okay now. All devices are on wifi, and the network is pretty steady. Guess the cloud backup amount and frequency was the spook involved.

Want to thank you guys for steering me in the upload direction. I really appreciate your help. Now I can fester about something else!!!!!

Oh, other than that wifi issue, I have had absolutely no issues with the phone. Battery life is fantastic. Camera works fine. Couldn't be happier with the choice to upgrade both phones. That buy one get one free from Verizon was a sweet deal. Works out to 100 bucks a phone!

Thank you I too had the same problem with the auto photo back up! It killed my gaming... aion went into meltdown!
On another issue im having with it... I live in Greece (but im british) and I use cosmote network.. and if I try use playstore or Samsung apps... its all in greek and only searches greek apps - I can understand nothing... the phone is in English btw... but like I said the catagories for the apps are all greek... im having some other issues too but I wont bog this down and ill work through one problem at a time.. thxs for replies in advance!
