N3 To G3/Looking for some feedback

grumpy

Newbie
I have the Verizon Note 3 right now. For anything but a phone it is awesome. As a phone I drop more calls then I did with a bag phone. I am on my 3rd Note 3. Before the Note 3 I had an Iphone 4 and 4s before that the original droid and none of them dropped calls like this one does

Saying that
How is this phone as a phone?
What do you think the primary problems are if any?

I use my phone as a tablet. I watch movies, play games and read books.

Also the camera is important to me.

I see mixed reviews about battery life but all seem to have that issue if you are a heavy user like I am.

Do you think this is the phone for me or should I keep looking?

best phone I have ever owned. Just sold my samsung s5 for it. Great call quality, very good battery, camera is fabulous. Love the replaceable battery and SD card slot. Knock code and button placement on the back is genius. You won't be disappointed.

I would say if you have the note 3 don't change.

But for me coming from a droid maxx, I've noticed big differences in the radio. I'm getting 1x in places where I'd normally have 4g. And the 4g/3g hand off is a little slow.

But my maxx had too big of a battery for me. I charged it every 2 days. I wanted bigger. And I wanted the ram.

I'm missing active notifications, gestures, and assist.

I will definitely be getting the verizon exclusive rendition of the 2nd edition moto X (droid quark or turbo etc)....

Coming from a Droid Razr Maxx I would say it's a mixed bag. I'm getting similar signal strength in my 4G area. The speaker is very loud and doesn't distort, which I like. The speakerphone is not quite loud enough IMHO.

I haven't dropped a single call and I make a lot of calls.

For call quality, I am having problems with people claiming they either can't hear me or I sound like I'm in a tin can, under water etc. Very intermittent but enough to be troubling. I'm on Verizon in a solid 4G area.

On my end, people sound crystal clear and loud!
No problems there.
The Voice Enhancement does introduce a click sound on my end once in a while. Not annoying though.

Camera is outstanding. It's a simple beast without the plethora of features and options you find on other phones but it has all the basics and takes incredibly clear pictures. I like simple and good vs complicated and not so good.

The knock-knock feature is also really nice.
The phone, at least for me has great battery life as long as you are sensible about the display brightness.

Charging is super fast with the included charger.
Amazing in fact compared to the Razr Maxx.

Apps just seem to run smooth with no problems.

So overall, I think LG or maybe Verizon needs to work on basic voice calling with this phone because something is not right.
Others are complaining as well so it's not just me.

Just a quick shout out to anybody that has switched over to a G3 from a N3.
I really, really like my N3 but it's way overkill for me. I rarely use the S pen and am thinking something a couple notches down may suit me better.
Email, photo sharing and appointment calendar are used very regularly for my business.
I was a iphone user for about 5 years prior and was to a point that I needed a larger screen. Well until recently Apple has not stepped up to the plate. Having an Android for the last year has really opened my eyes. Again I really like my N3 and am ok with just using 1% of its capability, I just need the large 5.5" +/- screen.

My daughter just picked one up an hr ago. She went from the S5 to it. Will post back her thoughts between the 2. I have the Note 3 also and looking to switch to a different phone also. I think the N3 is great for everything except a phone if you live in low signal areas.

Coming from the Note series, I'm VERY disappointed by the battery on the G3. It reminds me of my iPhone days when I felt like I had ration my usage throughout the day. I could run my Note like hell and never worried about the battery all day and night.

The other major disappointment about this phone is the display. Resolution aside, coming from years of looking at Samsung's AMOLED screens, the LCD on the G3 just doesn't cut it. Contrast, viewing angles, viewing in low light... They're just awful.

Nevermore all the little hiccups and bugs that come with any new phone and I'm sure are easily fixable, but here three months or so later and still no updates from LG/AT&T.

I regret not waiting a little longer for the Note 4, and I'll probably do something about that :-)

I just shelved my Note 3 shortly after popping the SIM into my brand new G3. the UI on the G3 puts TouchWiz entirely to shame, has zero lag, extremely snappy, better battery (my N3 got to 49% just sitting in my pocket all day at work, 12 hour shift--my G3 came home with 79% after the same but with everything turned on, as i've not changed a thing since it's brand new)

there is hardly any bloatware, and while i like the G2 UI in regards to showing off that beautiful screen, i must admit they did well with the flatter UI used on the G3. it has an Android L type of look.

the phone overall is nicer looking, and i no longer have to worry about smudging that chrome surround that is standard fare with Samsung phones, but if there is one thing i will miss, it's the S-Pen. without that, especially with KnockON and KnockCode, i must learn to live with an extremely greasy screen since my dirty fingers now have to touch it vs. the S-Pen, and i lose Pen Window. it does offer Multi-Window though, and the speed of the UI and features such as Smart Notice as well as superior battery is more than enough to make up for an accessory that benefited the Palm Pilot more than a 21st Century device.

I'm not sure why there are all these complaints about battery life. my Note 3 got through the day but needed charging as i got home and i couldn't use features such as WatchON remote as i'd be pretty low on charge by the time i got home. this G3 can easily make it two days before getting that low given the same usage.

Maybe it's that my eyes are uber sensitive to bright light, but the brighter-than-the-sun even at lowest dim setting of AMOLED gave me major eye strain, enough that reading ebooks on the Note 3 was painful, and i later bought a Tab 4 7 to use as an e-reader instead, but AMOLED remains too bright for me even at the lowest setting, it is like, at least to me, akin to staring into a star. this also happened with the PS Vita handheld. then comes the oversaturated colors, sure they make TouchWiz nice to look at, but other than that it's too loud. i prefer the more muted colors of the G3's screen and how it looks dim enough to be comfortable even at a higher brightness. it is more like looking at pages of a book, easy to use and easy on my eyes.

to be fair, the Tab 4 7 also uses more muted colors, and doesn't oversaturate.

AMOLED also has the sad reality of being a major battery hog while in use.

As far as a phone goes, i hardly use it as one. i work a job that is bad about killing smartphones so i pair to my G Watch and it stays in the pocket all day long, with my watch being the main interface during work hours. i keep a Samsung Convoy 3 (think rugby and military rugged spec) as my primary phone for email, messaging, music playback, bluetooth and other use. the G3 is just used as a data-enabled tablet as well as a backup phone #.

Get the icarez matte screen protectors. Very scratch resistant and the best smudge resistance period. Have very oily skin. Glass protector gets dirty and lowers screen sensitivity.

Except screen protectors take the gloss and graphics away and get bubbles under them and occasional hairs and insects. If that doesn't happen you just get graphics akin to an early pocket PC.

My experience with screen protectors makes them a waste of money. They still get smudges or worse, things trapped under them.

Screen protectors applied correctly that aren't junk from eBay work very well. You should see how much they've evolved. And with the cost of phones it's more economical to protect your investment. Js

Ive never had any issue with the screen cracking so again I despise screen protectors because they do reduce the quality if the image generated by the display and they are not fingerprint proof.

The death of smartphones in my use has to do with my job. Exposed to gasoline, shorting out in sweaty pockets, getting run over, chewed on by deer or other animals, etc.
