Named access to LAN resources

I'm trying to access some of my LAN resources from my Droid. I need to access by name rather than IP, because (for one thing) my internal WordPress blog knows the server name. So although I can get to the server initially, clicking on links doesn't work.

I've seen information about editing /etc/hosts if the device is rooted. But I don't really want to root - I'm not planning development and wondering if I'd screw up something.

Is there another way to do this easily? On the Droid itself? I guess I could set up DNS on the LAN, but that seems difficult. I'm using hosts files on my Windows and Linux machines and everything works fine.

Thanks!
