Root Nandroids and hboots and kernels, oh my

I have searched this topic and found some info, but wanted to post to make sure, since I saw a few different things- sorry to create a new thread about it.

Before I play with different ROMs again, I want to make sure I understand more about some components.

Some ROMs require specific hboots, and you can further play around with kernels too. So, if I flash kernels, and then restore a nandroid / recovery, I will be back with the kernel that I was using when I made the recovery, is this correct? These are backed up? But hboots and radios, once flashed, do not get backed up, or included with ROMs; these you need to manage yourself, independent of ROM flashing?

Also, I flashed different ROMs with my last phone, as well as radios and hboots and everything. Finally, I went back to stock with the latest radio and regular hboot, but my phone was not operating as smoothly, and features such as texting were slower than normal. That's why I got a replacement phone. Since then, everything has been working perfectly. I rooted and s-offed, but hadn't changed anything else. Does flashing everything around a lot break things? I'm reluctant to do it again because I don't think I can get another replacement.

Flashing a lot SHOULDN'T break things, as long as you follow the op's directions carefully.

To sum it up this way:

If you plan on using anything besides Jmz stock rom, the stock rom, or Cool ICS, then you can use hboot 1.5050. That will boot virtually any ROM out there.

As far as kernels...

You are correct. If you flash Anthrax on a ROm, then restore your Nandroid, its back to the previous kernel. The nandroid contains a boot.img.

Radio, PRI, Hboot, etc are stuck in the phone and NOT changed whenever you do a restore, new ROM, etc. They're more or less in a different partition of the phone that you cannot access by normal means ;)

Hope that helps!

I might question your procedure initially when you said you went back to stock. What sort of wipe did you perform? What was your recovery?

I believe I'd just wiped everything in TWRP 2. The phone had everything from the "turn your phone into an Evo 3D" thread, but I had updated the radio to the latest (0706). I then flashed Jmz stock rooted, and it was never the same.
