Help Native Android email app interacting with gmail app?

When I receive email on my LG Lucid it seems that 2 email apps get copies. I only have a gmail account. When I delete emails from the gmail app, I often have to delete the same messages again from the other email app. There are 2 notification icons as well. But this other app doesn't get all emails, just some. This may have something to do with 'conversations', which I don't fully understand. Is there a native Android email client that is separate from the gmail client? How do I know which client I'm using? Can I disable the native app?

If you only want to use the gmail app go to the native email app and disable all the notifications on it.

If you want both setup to see your gmail change the other email app to imap instead of pop3 - that way when one has deleted the email it won't still be there in the other.
