Help Native E-mail app: Messages becoming unread

Steel Rat

Newbie
Hello all,

On my Samsung Galaxy S 4G with the native email app, some emails become marked as unread after a week or so, for no apparent reason.

This is a work POP email account. I read email either on my Galaxy or via webmail. I mark messages as read on my phone 99% of the time. But after a week or so, as mentioned, suddenly I'll see a new message notification on the mail icon, and when I look, there are one or more messages which I had previously marked as read now showing unread at the bottom of the list.

On a related note, sometimes when going into my webmail, there will be unread messages which I had marked as read on my phone. So the problem clearly appears to be with the phone email app not updating the server properly all the time, even though I almost always have a good signal.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Hey Steel Rat,

I have moved this thread into the Galaxy S 4G forums to receive some more specific assistance.

I know sometimes mine has issues like this like when i receive an email on my phone and then check it on my computer right away, the notification never goes away and continues to mark the email unread even when marking it read on the computer.

It is probably just some bug dealing with the computer communicating with your smart phone.

No problem about moving it.

I don't think that's the problem I'm experiencing. It's not the same messages coming unread all the time, they're always different. I use the phone for most of the email stuff, only go to webmail on the PC once or twice a day.

Some more information.

When I get new messages at the top of the list, and delete some or all of them, old, previously read messages which had fallen off the bottom of the list will appear again as unread. Even though when i view my inbox on the server, they're read.

Another update.

I upgraded to a Galaxy S3 a few months ago, and the same problem existed with the native email app and Jelly Bean OS.

However, I started using the Go Email widget, and it never had that problem. Something to do with the native app or any app that uses the same api I would guess (I had tried K9 at one point on my Galaxy S and it had the same problem).

Since then, I've not been using pop3 email any more (work issued me a friggin' iPhone 4S, so all work email goes through that now, It doesn't have the unreading problem...)

I use IMAP rather than POP3 and don't have that. I also never used the phone's email. I always had another app. Phone was rooted. I found that other apps worked better than what came with the phone after I rooted it.

Right now I use Aquamail. It does a better job with some accounts. I'm up to the N4 by now.

It could be in your settings for sync. I don't sync as it gets confusing between an XP laptop, Mint desktop, Android phone and Tablet. If I clean mail out - I usually use the laptop since that's the first computer I hit in the AM.
