Help Navigation

Is anyone having any problems with their navigation app? (The one that comes stock on the phone).

I travel for work and really need navigation to get around. 9 times out of 10 I'll be on route and all of a sudden the GPS Signal is Lost. Now I know this sometimes happens, but when it happens on my phone, it will search and search and search and never get the signal back. If I restart the entire phone, it will find it then. This can be a little troublesome when you're driving!!

BTW, this is my second Galaxy S3, I had to sent the first one back for a warranty replacement for a different issue, but the first one had this same problem too.

Suggestions?

We have some areas in WA that have NO SERVICE. A couple times traveling around I got into trouble (like you) and had a terrible time finding my way around.

Download and install CoPilot. You download all the maps you need onboard, and it works with no data connections! Use wireless connection when you download the maps as they are slow without wireless, to download.

I even have it installed on an old G2 phone which I have no sim card in and the Nav function works flawlessly. If you have an external SD Card, you can move the maps to it and still have a lot of room on your phone's memory. You need to Google how to do that, but first, try the app if you like it. (I do) anyway, you will have absolutely no problems when loosing GPS navigation with poor data connections ever again.

BTW, All the maps for the US, Alaska, and Hawaii are free to download.

Aloha and Good Luck!
Happy Traveling :)

I also have a Galaxy S3, but never had it lose the GPS signal. Granted, with the ravenous data consumption Google Navigation uses, I probably don't use GPS as frequently as you do. Are you running the stock OS?

I am running the stock OS, and I don't think it is a signal problem because when I restart the phone it finds the GPS Signal with no problem. When I was in North Carolina on business, I lost the GPS signal about 20 minutes from the hotel, so irritating!! And it couldn't find the signal all week!!! I didn't think to restart the phone that time. When I was using it the other day in Boston, for some reason I decided to restart the phone which fixed the issue with not finding the GPS signal.

But seriously, I shouldn't have to restart the phone while driving!

I do occasionally lose the GPS signal, but it seems to always happen around the same places. Perhaps it is due to structures or the geography of the area. Tunnels are a given. I normally use Waze. I used Google Maps before and do find that it loses the lock on occasion, but always gets it back rather quickly after moving a bit. It is the same with every phone I had. On my old Nokia, I noticed that when it loses the lock, it has a hard time getting it back unless I stop moving. My HTC Desire Z and SGS3 always gets it back quickly.

Usually don't notice Maps losing GPS but not being able to connect to the internet, which looks like it cannot get a lock (unless of course it does say GPS lost).

Sometimes I notice that if you lose 3G and it needs to re-route, it cannot do it until you enable / disable Airplane or data connection.

Might be my carrier of course, but who knows :)
