Root need a new rom?

is there any firmware that the galaxy s can use because i put a rom of gingerbread.xxjw4 on my phone because it was on virgin but now its a bit potty the battery can say charged and i take charger out and it says battery dead
its a new battery? i just want to put a nice stable rom on it so my son can use it wifi is also a must
