need advice on best mobile device to access gmail w/out a data plan

Hi. Apologies in advance since this answer is probably in this archive--but I cant find it exactly. I'm in the NY city area so plenty of wifi spots. I am interested in a mobile device that I can simply access my gmail account, no more. I dont want to pay for data service and already have a blackberry phone provided thru work. The only reason I need another device is because my work blocks me from access to "outside" emails such as gmail, verizon comcast etc. I just need to only occasionally use gmail during the day for personal (non work) stuff, and so I dont want to get an expensive device and plan. I hate even to have to carry another device beyond my bberry but as I said my company is forcing my hand here. so im thinking a used android phone and get gmail via wifi does the trick?

Why a phone? There are plenty of wifi devices out there that can check emails.

fair point. does not have to be a phone. cost is the issue though. only going to check in on gmail occasionally--like once or twice per day, so don't want to commit $$$ to it
