Need advice on rooting

OM2

I'd like some advice on how to root my Motorola Flipout

I've googled and can't find any specific guides like I've seen for other phones

I did see one link where you install an app and that roots the phone
The only thing I'm worried about is the source of the rooting program - is it safe?
If its an open sour e solution developed by many - then I'd consider safe

Is there a 'generic' guide to rooting?
After I root, do I install a rom?
Or is that part of the rooting process itself?
(The routing app I mentioned above did not make any reference to installing roms)

How do I know if a rom is ok for my phone?

Are there COMPLETE backup/imaging programs that will allow my phone to be returned to an original state?

ALSO are there 'firewall' programs? That monitor traffic and alert me if an app wants to communicate out in some way?

All replies appreciated

Thanks

I think they are talking about universal androot, it is safe to use, you may also be able to use z4root.

There is no generic guide to rooting due to each phone being different sometimes different methods must be used.
Roms are made by devs who have the phone, I couldn't find any flipout roms in the Flipout root section here Flipout - All Things Root - Android Forums
Flashing a rom is not part of the root process.

If your phone is the device the rom was made for it should be okay, with a phone on more than 1 carrier you may need to make sure your carrier is supported.

You may be able to flash clockworkmod recovery to make backups of your current rom you should do before uninstalling stock apps.

Not sure about a firewall program perhaps someone else could provide more info.
