Need an application to put the phone down

OM2

Android Enthusiast
I have a Sony Ericsson X10 Mini Pro - I hate it for several reasons!
But I can't ever give it for several reasons!!! (Most important reason being it's really small + it's an Android phone)

Probably the most annoying feature is not being able to put the phone down *instantly*
OK, to be fair this a 'fantastic' feature of 95% of Android phones

What's wrong with having a phyical button that ends EVERYTHING!

Instead, I *have* to WAIT for the damn icon to appear after removing from the side of my head!!

It takes a LOOONG lifetime for the icon to appear - OK, it probably takes 1/2 - 1 second to appear - tooo long for me! And frustrating! How many hours of my life have I lost waiting for the button to appear so that I can end the call!?

AND... what happens if you accidentally hit something else!! And end up going to another menu!!??
Aaaaah...!
You have to navigate your way back to the call - this take an enternity to do - and especially f u start panicing and want to do it quickly - the evil phone knows!! and slooows you down!

1. What am I missing?? Is there a quick way to put the phone down with one of the keys??

2. Else, failing that, is there an application that will let me use one of the physical keys to put the phone down? Not sure how well this would work out - but can't think it would be hard to program?

I've come across one of the *best* applications the world has ever seen for Android! Actually... there's quite a few of these - I can put loudspeaker on by simply turning the phone upside down OR putting it flat face down!!!!
WOW! magic!
(Getting to the loud speaker to work is a pain in the **** for me otherwise!)
Is there a similar application to end my calls??

Am I going mad? Does someone out there understand or appreciate my problems!?

Thanks!

OM

I take it that by "put the phone down" you mean "end the current call"? I'm not sure which Android version your phone runs, but Android 2.2 includes a "Power button ends calls" option under Settings > Accessibility.

If I misunderstood what you're looking for, then hopefully you can briefly clarify.

unclemike, yes, that's exactly what i'm talking about!
sony ericsson mini x10 pro has android ver 1.6 :(

how the heck do people cope without the end call button???
it's soooo annoying not having

good news though for x10 users out there, sony ericsson have announced that android 2.2 will be coming out in 5 years time - though they may extend this deadline endlessly making ample empty promises

multiple empty promises have been made about android 2.1 about its release dates

as soon as anyone else brings out another android phone WITH physical keyboard, then i'm moving to that and donating my x10 mini pro to ebay

but: surely someone out there has written an application for phones to end calls?

let me know what you think

thanks

Hi.

I don't see how that helps as you still have to get to your homescreen to tap the widget, which obviously takes longer than 0.5 - 1 second.

yes, ur right of course
but there are some geniouses out there that have written applications that do things when u turn ur phone upside down or put face down on table

(i mentioned this in my original post)

i thought someone could write an application to end calls simply by turning the phone upside down

:) :) :)

lmao, why upside down? I'm sure there could be an application that could be written to use the power button in android os < 2.2, but I'm sure a lot of people arn't looking for this, so if there's demand enough, maybe someone will do it lol

upside down - or something else like the power button, doesn't matter
all i want is a quick way to put the damn phone down!

blackberry: why do they bother having a phone down key??
apple iphone: i haven't actually used, but would assume the big button can be used to end calls??

am i the only one? do i stand alone with my opinion?
does the world not care about wasting 1 second to end every single phone call made?

maybe i should start a one man campaign to save the world! :) :)

Never had issues with getting the End Call button to appear when I pull the Droid away from my face. Perhaps you should troubleshoot your issue.

admitted, i haven't tried out every single android phone on the market
BUT: the ones i have tried (at least 4 or 5), all have had the same characteristic - you have to wait for the end call button to appear

are u saying that you see the button *instantly* appear??
what phone do u have? i'd definitely like to give it a go, just to see
but, i would say that there is a good reason why there is a small delay in the button appearing, the sensor that detects light has to take a small amount of time to kick in and then make the screen change?

I can't speak for all phones, but by the time I stop talking and pull the phone away from my ear, the screen is on and the end call button is visible.

That sensor is a proximity sensor. A light sensor would be ineffective in a darkened room, and if you try, you'll see that your screen still blanks in the dark. The delay is deliberate, BTW. If the screen popped on the instant you moved the phone away from your ear, the screen would be coming on frequently during calls giving you the opportunity to accidentally press a button and wasting your battery.

I guess it is possible to create an app that would let you hang up when you lay it face down or something, but to he honest, yes, I think you stand alone on this one. Are you worried about someone walking into the room and catching you on the phone and want a way to pull it away and hang up inconspicuously or something? LOL!

There is. Get the samsung epic. Best phone out imo. You could end that call as fast as you want. If you don't want the epic, there's the tmobile g2. I wouldn't recomend anything else when it comes to keyboard phones...

i only send text messages to my mistress, so i'm ok on that one

let's say it takes one second for the hang up button to appear
(i think it's slightly less to be fair)
how many calls will u make in a year?
for arguments sake, lets say u make 5 calls a day every day
so in a year u make 1825 calls
so that's 1825 seconds of ur life u r losing
that's more than 30 minutes

imagine what u can do with 30 minutes

erm... am i taking it tooo far? :)
lol

samsung: i don't like samsung - their phones i find will have dumb issues and problems - like having *everything* apart from loudspeaker + really really bad bluetooth problems
i had a look anyway - it's a brick. i don't want a brick

tmobile g2: hmmm intrigued. i like. but i didn't spot the end call key?

anyway, nothing beats the x10 mini pro - despite it's damn damn probs: it's very very small + it's got android! those 2 combinations make it the best phone for me personally (despite the DAMN problems for which i HATE it - but can't live without!!)

The Xperia X10 is supposed to get 2.1 anythime this month, the X10 mini/pro I'm not so sure about. That thing is an oddly designed phone and doesn't seem ideal for using for phone calls, and you say you can't even end calls? LOL there's no accessability > power button ends call option?

thanks for the replies guys
android 2.1? bah humbug!! they're talking about getting out android 3.0 before end of december!
android 2.1 is not even guaranteed for the x10 (regardless of model) - it's up to ur operator!

same as with HTC desire, go to settings, accessibility, check power button ends call and you can now instantly end call by pressing the power button instead of waiting for the screen to light up then pressing end call

see...!! i am NOT the ONLY one - there are others who have to wait for the button to appear! :)

i went to accebility - it's all greyed out?? why have it there if it does nothing!

Roze: i've actually called sony ericsson and have asked them - they told me "android is a wonderful system, u can do ANYTHING with it, maybe some clever person has written an app to help u do what u want" - i've been searching for an application ever since :)

By the power of greyskull, opps, I mean google - End Call **FREE VERSION**
hey... i'm going to report u to the mods for getting me over excited for no reason :(

quote: **REQUIRES Motorola DROID**
(so only good for motorola phones?)

besides, the camera button, or even the power button aren't really any good
they're in non-intuitive places + i think i'm right in saying that for the link that u gave for, it requires u to HOLD DOWN the damn button! while that's great in itself - and a good replacement, still none the less not good enough!

and for those of u who said i was the only one: well i'm not!! read some of the other threads - there more of us out there! :) :)

Is thereva section for "Apps to help avoid getting caught" for this to go under?

maybe ur joking - but there a few applications out there that will do exactly this
most of them work on the basis that if u put the phone face down, it goes into silent non ringing mode - really useful i think
