To some extent rooting is like jailbreaking. But after rooting you cannot install paid apps for free.
The main features of rooting are :
1. The ability to move apps to SD Card(as the phone memory in Android is very low).
2. The ability to overclock/underclock your processor(underclocking saves battery /overclocking increases performance.
3. Remove the useless stock apps.
