I used odin to try to root my galaxy S3 ...the attempt failed...now my screen is the on firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in kies and try again...is there a way to fix this.. This is what my in on screen

Maybe better to ask in the all things root section for your model but have you rebooted and tried again with odin?
