Easiest way is to use Samsung's Kies 3.0

* Kies | SUPPORT | SAMSUNG

You can use cloud services also, but I don't trust the cloud.
YMMV

Lots of folks use Google+ to back up their apps, pictures, etc...

There is an app called Helium that is useful

Helium has a lot of negative reviews, so I would be careful about depending on it.

Kies 3.0 is flawless so far for me.

Kies makes a carbon image of the phone, just like cloning a computer disk.

You can restore all data from any app or contact list.

By the developers own admissions only backs up the apps themselves, not the data that they create.
