Root Need help re: rooting a phone and full memory

First of all, I am soooo glad to see that I'm not the only one having an issue with this!! After I posted about my memory being full on Facebook, a friend directed me to this site and, specifically, to the post about the phone being full, but it's not.

So that got me looking around and trying to figure out what to do.
I guess the solution to that is to "root" my phone, which if I understand correctly, means to make myself an administrator so I can move or delete stuff. Why more programs can't be allowed to be stored on the SD card, I don't know. My SD card is nearly empty!! And, of course, I don't need MySpace, LG Social, Amazon, etc., so I am excited about the possibility of deleting those programs!!

But I'm clueless and TERRIFIED of doing something to my phone. I am the girl who took a BASIC computer elective in high school (yes, I'm that old) and dropped it because I was failing it and it was ruining my GPA. So my computer confidence is not high.

I did back up all 555mb of my SD card on my computer already. I was prepared to follow the directions to root my phone that Trident posted here: http://androidforums.com/ally-all-t...-3-2011-3-40-pm-est-now-easier-than-ever.html
But I don't know if my phone version is newer or older than what Trident said it should be. He said it should be older than VS740ZV06. My phone version is SV740ZVE. Still, I was prepared to downgrade if need be and clicked on his link to start the root. I clicked on the froyo.zip link to download it, and got a 404 error. So now I'm stuck and not sure how to proceed. That's why I started a new thread. It appears the info from Trident's post is no longer working (that post is almost 2 years old, after all)


Can someone provide an updated working link to root my phone, and also to tell me if I need to downgrade my phone (and how would I do that anyway?????)


And really, I have no desire to make all the cool changes some of you made once you rooted your phone. I don't care to change my notifications color or background or whatever, etc. I just want to be able to use my phone, text, Facebook and look up stuff online. I truly couldn't care less about appearances on my phone. I don't even understand half the stuff I was reading this morning - velocity, rom, etc. I just want my phone to work right!!

I haven't decided to do anything yet, as my phone's mostly working okay now that I reset it (grrr).

But while I was at Verizon having them do the reset (I was getting ready to leave for vacation the next day and didn't have the time to reset the phone, much less do it myself) I asked the guy if he knew anything about rooting the phone. He said it was illegal. Not that I really give a flip if it is, but is it? I don't think it is, or at least it shouldn't be because it's MY phone and I'm paying for it, so why should I have crap on there that I don't want? Personally, I think they tell customers that so they don't mess up their phone.

I think when my 2 years are up, I'll upgrade to a different phone, as I heard the Ally doesn't have much memory to begin with. I'm not even sure I'll stay with the Android. I dunno; I have another year to think on this, so we'll see.

Go ahead and root, it's not illegal but will voidd your warranty. At this point warranty really doesn't mean anything because the phone is well out of the support stage. Basically, once rooted, use ROM Manager to flash an alternate recovery. Install/flash AmonRa 306 while in Rom Manager recovery, then install the velocity ROM from AmonRa recovery, version 1.2, update 18. Best and most versatile ROM for the Ally. The Ally is a great little phone, albeit a bit limited by its memory. If you need files or other assistance, PM me and I will do what I can to help.
