Root Need help rooting

Hi guys,have been wanting to root for a while but was stupidly waiting for the 2.3 update that was supposed to come out at the end of last month!I got tired of waiting and thought well being rooted will prob be better than just having 2.3,so ive uninstalled htc sync put the hboot drivers on following the instructions...not a problem all is as should be,i installed terminal emulator and typed "cat/proc/mtd" to see if im a 20 or 40 but got cat/proc/mtd: not found....The lines on terminal emulator are $export PATH=/data/local/bin:$PATH
$cat/proc/mtd
$cat/proc/mtd: not found
Im prob being a noob as im a windows man not a linux man but dont want to carry on til i know if im 20 or 40,heres my phone details its a vodafone btw:

Any help or suggestions on what i should do/use would be great,would like to say great work to SUroot you have the patience of a saint lol hope it hasnt run out yet!!!

There needs to be a space between cat and /proc/mtd

One more thing though has anyone done a list of available roms and what the differences are?

Yeah that was my fault. I replied in the original thread and then asked Mods to split it and lock the original thread. My reply was removed, it was split but then this thread was locked...

Not sure what happened there tbh.

All roms are linked in the "All about Rooting" sticky thread. CTDdroid had a site that compares roms. Not sure how up to date it is.
