Help Need help setting the Samsung Intercept up as a hotspot and tethering it

I just purchased an Intercept yesterday. It has Android 2.2.2. What I am wondering is has someone recently set theirs up as a hotspot and tethered it? How did you do it? Also, will the OS (as is, out of the box) allow the phone to access secure websites (those with addressess beginning with (https)? The man at the store I purchased it from said that I would have to download the mobile version of AVG Antivirus in order for the phone to connect to secure sites. Is this true?

Thanks in advance! I am finding out that the method changes over time. So, if you did this six months ago, the method that you used may no longer work.
