Root Need help to root my htc desire

Hi guys, first post here so please be gentle.

I'm trying to root my HTC desire to bring it out of the ice age. I've actually been trying for around 7 hours now, trying different instructions but it just wont work.

As far as I can tell, my biggest issue is installing the unrEVOked modified USB driver. I download the link from here - public:windows_hboot_driver_install [RootWiki] - then when I click on the download tab it opens up in winzip. From here I unzip the file. When I go on to device manager I don't have a "other devices" mine says "ports (COM & LPT)" sub-sectioned in that is "HTC serial interface (COM6)". I right clicked on that and clicked update driver software. I follow the instructions as laid out in the above link but when I hit close at the very end I don't get the "android phone" tab with sub-sectioned "android bootloader interface". I'm pretty sure that I could get the, what appears to be simple process done if I could just get this driver and the hboot process done properly. If someone could could explain so an infant could understand then I may succeed. Or just explain what I'm doing wrong.

Sorry for the drawn out explanation and for the fact that I haven't a clue what I'm doing.
Thanks in advance

this is the method that I used:

This method will also flash a custom recovery image so you can start flashing ROMs immediately.

On your computer, go to Start > Control Panel > Programs > and Uninstall HTC Sync if it is installed before you continue.

UPDATE (1.18.11) - You must have active service on the phone, an SD card in the phone, and use the latest Unrevoked for your specific device from the download page.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Download the Unrevoked Rooting App

Unrevoked (Updated 09.20.10)---> unrevoked3 recovery reflash tool, v3.32

*If the above version of Unrevoked doesn’t work, try this one, Unrevoked 3.31. ---> http://downloads.unrevoked.com/recovery/3.31/reflash.tar.gz

2. Double click the Unrevoked program you downloaded. If using Windows, then click on the file that appears called Hboot Driver and follow it’s instructions to install the modified HBoot drivers OR download the drivers and install them manually here ---> public:windows_hboot_driver_install [RootWiki]

3. Once the drivers are successfully installed, double click the Reflash program to open it.

4. Once the driver is successfully installed, turn off the phone by taking out the battery and putting it back in. Then push power to turn it on and get it to the normal home screen.

5. On your computer, right click the Reflash file and run as administrator. It should open Unrevoked and say “waiting for device”.

6. On your phone, click Menu > Settings > Applications > Development > and make sure USB Debugging is checked ON.

7. Plug in your phone into your computer via usb cable.

8. It should automatically locate your phone that is plugged in and you can just follow the prompts to continue.

9. Done! You are rooted and have a custom recovery image!

Welcome to the forum :)

Afraid I can't help with driver installation - not a Windows type myself.

We do have a couple of different guides linked here: http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/503471-desire-all-things-root-guide.html. Which one you want (unrevoked or revolutionary) depends on your phone's software and hboot versions, so it's probably worth checking that to avoid wasting time on a method that won't work on your phone (e.g. unrevoked will not work with hboot higher than 0.93 or android version newer than 2.2.1, so if either of those is true you should use revolutionary).

Welcome chopperheys!!
I moved your thread to the Root section for your device:)

Looks like KJohns and Hadron provided some solutions for ya:) Good luck!!

Thanks for the reply. My device is running on hboot 0.93 and android 2.2.2. I just tried the revolutionary method and failed miserably. when I unzip and run revolutionary it finds my phone and asks me for beta key, I type that in and it says invalid key. I'm using this guide - http://androidforums.com/desire-all...ff-root-htc-desire-revolutionary-updated.html - I also couldn't complete step 3, so I did bypass this which is probably why the beta key isn't working.

@KJohns - what you posted is what I had been trying but was struggling with the hboot drivers installation.

So basically it looks like this is way out of my capabilities unless someone can simplify it even further for me.:o:o Out of curiosity am I actually going to benefit much from doing this? I do have a Galaxy s2 also, so if it isn't going to outperform that then it may well just be a needless exercise.

@Mikestony - sorry for posting in the wrong section. I should hopefully learn how to navigate the site soon.

Thanks all for the help, and sorry for being so useless.

OK, if it's 2.2.2 I think you've no option but revolutionary.

I don't think step 3 is related to why the beta key isn't working. Did you try copying and pasting the key - that fixes it in a lot of cases (many people have problems typing them - I did myself when I tested it).

Without step 3 you may still be able to do it, but you'd have to use Revolutionary's recovery, which is less stable than the ones we recommend. But if it suffices to get you rooted you could probably use the 4Ext app in the Play Store to install a better recovery afterwards, so maybe that would be OK. ADB and fastboot are useful tools to have generally, but you may be able to do this without them.

BTW Step 1 of the revolutionary guide is to install the same hboot drivers that unrevoked needs. Did you succeed in that?
