Hello everyone. I have had Verizon for the last 6 years or so. I just purchased a Samsung Galaxy S4 from Walmart through Straight Talk (runs on AT&T network). I used to be able to send text messages longer than 160 characters to most people, and they would receive it as one text message. Now with my new phone straight talk phone, if I send a text longer than 160 characters, it is received in pieces, or only a piece is received. There appears to be no rhyme or reason.

I sent a text to my gf that was over 160 characters. She received it in 3 pieces and out of order. The next time i sent her a text, she only received a small piece of it. She has Verizon. I then text my old phone that still has service (Verizon), and it came to me in 4 pieces, in order. My new phone will receive long texts all as one message. What the heck is going on?

I really want to be able to send a text over 160 characters and not have my recipients get it in pieces (or missing pieces). What can I do to fix this? Thanks so much!!!

Mike

All I can say is it should work, but then concatenating 160char SMSs together to appear as a longer message has always been a kludge anyway. Don't think it's a problem with the phone, because I've done this with Samsungs many times, sending longer than 160char (80char Chinese) SMSs. Sounds like a problem with the carrier, Straight Talk, e.g. only one piece of the complete message being delivered, you sent 2-3 concatenated SMSs and they only delivered 1.

I learned it in the early '80s from BASIC programming manuals, meaning to join character strings together, e.g. 100 LET C$=A$+B$. :D

concatenate |kənˈkatnˌāt|
verb [ trans. ] formal or technical
link (things) together in a chain or series : some words may be concatenated, such that certain sounds are omitted.
ORIGIN late 15th cent. (as an adjective): from late Latin concatenat- ‘linked together,’ from the verb concatenare, from con- ‘together’ + catenare, from catena ‘chain.’
