Need help with Android and Hotmail

Hi there.

Just got a galaxy S3, on my previous phones, S1 and HTC Desire, I gave up trying to get my hotmail working on it. Problem I had was that I have my Hotmail very organised so work emails go direct to work folder, bills to bills etc. When I tried before I could never get the folders to show even on Active Sync etc.

However I have now gave it another shot and managed to get all my folders etc to show (although have to actually manually go to the other folder). Im so close to getting it working perfectly, now the only thing that I cant get working the way I'd prefer is that the inbox syncs perfectly but if I get a new message into say 'Bills' it doesnt show when I look at the list of folders.

e.g. On Hotmail Website it would show:
Inbox (4)
Sent
Bills (1)
Work

Whereas it will not show the (?) on any folder except inbox even if there are new messages in them. So basically I would have to look through every individual folder (have about 12) to check for new messages.
I am hoping I am missing something obvious, if someone could help would be a lifesaver!

Oh and just to add... this was on the standard 'email' app on the S3 but have downloaded the official Hotmail one and get the EXACT same problem.

Thank you in advance!!

hmmm there has to be a way to do it. One thing I didnt say is that I dont mind using an alternative Email app (preferably free).

I have been researching this all day and the closest I seem to have come is that K-9 mail should do it, but then I hit another brick wall when I can only get my Hotmail set up as pop3 which doesnt have subfolders.

Im guessing it would need to be an Imap? If I can get it set up as that in K9 it should be problem solved but just keep getting 'cant connect to server' error.

Anyone have any resolutions for this new issue? Or the original lol whichever... please... its driving me nuts! :P

I can get all my folders to show up ok, its just that I dont get a notification when an email goes into a subfolder, either in the top bar or a (1) next to the folder(s) that have a new message.

So I dont know that I have a new message unless I actually go into each folder individually. :(

I just downloaded the free version of MailDroid and I love it. It quickly set up my two hotmail accounts. I may add my gmail account later. The best part is, for every email you receive on your device, you can choose to either delete it from the device only, or from the device AND server (saving you time back at your desk!)

My only problem now is finding a way to sync my Hotmail calendar events. I really need this, because I use Windows Live Mail and prefer the Hotmail calendars.

I'd like to have a separate calendar app to do this, but so far the ones I've downloaded are not enabling Hotmail calendar. When I went to check my settings, for some reason my Samsung Galaxy Prevail is only allowing google accounts to be added (in the "Settings" > "Accounts & Sync" )

Anybody have an idea how to get my Hotmail calendar events to my Droid?

If you've added your Hotmail.com account to your Android phone, then you can sync your Hotmail calendar to your stock Android calendar. No apps or software required. It's already built-into Android. I've been doing that for 2 years. Works perfectly.

Go to Settings -> Accounts & Sync and make sure that "Background Data" and "Auto-sync" boxes are checked.

Select your Hotmail account and make sure that the "Sync Calendar" box is checked (and the "Sync Contacts" box if you want to sync contacts).

If you go into your Calendar -> Settings -> More -> Calendars, you can choose which calendars to sync & and/or view. It is possible to sync & view or just sync or just view. If you choose to view multiple calendars the events will appear on your phone's calendar and be color-coded by account (but they won't actually be merged).

More details about this method can be found at this link.
