Need help with Locale or Tasker

I currently have Locale, but I'd be happy to buy Tasker if that would do what I'm wanting.

During the night while I'm sleeping I want all notifications to be disabled (text messages, email, facebook, etc.) with the exception of one app and phone calls. So I only want to be disturbed by a phone call and notifications from a single app.

I've been trying to figure out how to do this with Locale, but it just doesn't seem possible.

Anybody know how to do this with Locale or Tasker?

If you're just looking to silence the other app notifications (but still allow them to appear in the notification bar), then this can be done with Tasker. I would have been much easier with older versions of Android, before Google inseparably (and inexplicably) linked the ringer and notification volumes.

How you go about doing it is a matter of personal preference, but is affected by how you're currently setup. Assuming all your apps use the default sound for notification, you can set the default notification sound to "Silent" at night, and have Tasker play a notification sound when a notification from the single app (that you want to disturb you) appears, and in the morning have Tasker set the default sound back to normal.

Making less assumptions about your current setup (app-specific notification sounds may be used), you would set the Silent Mode to ON, then have Tasker temporarily turn Silent Mode OFF when the phone is ringing, or turn Silent Mode OFF and play a sound when the single app notification appears, and then turn Silent Mode ON again. In the morning, Tasker would turn Silent Mode back to normal.

Note that some devices don't respond to changes in silent mode while the phone is ringing, but it's possible to work around this, though it's a bit more complicated.

As much as am "pro Tasker", it's overkill if this is all you would use it for, and you may be better off looking for a purpose-built app.

Also, I imagine it's possible to do something like this in Locale too, but I haven't used it in years and don't have a clue as to any details on making it do this.

Hi,

I am the developer of Locale. Since you already own Locale, for the fastest support we recommend contacting our support team directly by choosing Contact Support from the menu of the main Locale screen. Our team isn't able to always monitor third party forums, but today is your lucky day!

Locale has a VIP Caller template built-in, to enable the phone to ring for certain callers while the phone is silent. Just tap Add Situation, then choose VIP Calling, then confirm which contacts you'd like to enable to ring through.

However it is not possible with any app to silence notifications for all apps except one specific app. You could manually edit the settings for each of those individual apps to turn off notifications, only leaving your single app enabled, but there isn't a way to automate this in Android due to security restrictions.

Thanks,
Carter
