Need Help With Rooting AT&T Galaxy S

Hey everyone, I just a few minutes ago, tried to root my Samsung Galaxy S. I've rooted phones before, so I know a little of what I'm doing. The problem is, since I have AT&T I now have lost the ability to allow non-market apps to be installed via applications settings. Anyways, when I finally got z4root installed, I ran it and chose permanent root. It did its thing for a minute, then it randomly closed out. Did the same thing everytime I re-tried, even after phone reboot. Not to mention my phone is slower now, and the root checker app I DL'd says it's not rooted. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
