Need help with Tasker

Hi,
I have a tasker running on a UK o2 HTC Desire, stock HTC Rom Android
2.2. I also have Handcent for managing text messages.

I setup a profile that will enable GPS and a mobile data connection,
upon receiving a secret keyword in a text. (Then I can locate the mobile via seekdriod)

Copied from tasker's clipboard said:
Profile: Gps (2)
Event: Received Text
Enter: Gps (3)
A1: GPS [ Set:On]
A2: Mobile Data APN [ Enable:On Keep MMS: Off Notify:Off ]

In Detail
-----------------
Context
-----------------
Received Text
Priority: High
Type: SMS
sender: Optional
Content: secret
-----------------
Tasks
-----------------
1. GPS > set: on
2. Mobile Data APN > Enabled

With this profile set up I am currently experiencing two problems.

1. When testing the tasks within tasker, the GPS turns on but the
mobile data doesn't. I tried the other mobile data toggle, but still
doesn't work.

2. If i send a text containing the secret keyword to the phone. Tasker
does't report as any profile being active and neither the GPS or
mobile data connection turns on.

Please advise

I emailed tasker's google groups for support but have heard nothing from them :S

The profile is only active for a split second until it finishes running the tasks. Which doesn't take long at all to do, so it might not even be noticeable. As for the mobile data turning on/off, I've experienced issues with this too, and I think it's a CDMA issue to be honest.

The way Tasker turns Mobile Data on and off is different than how it works through the Android UI (on most devices). So for Tasker's Mobile Data action to work, data must be enabled in the Android UI.

If GPS is also not turning on, the task probably isn't running, which means the profile probably isn't activating. As barqers said, you won't be able to see the task as active since the Received Text context is an event (has no duration).

For troubleshooting purposes I would add a noticeable action to the task, like Vibrate or Popup. This should be a good indicator of whether the task is actually running. If the task isn't running, try clearing the content part of the context, so that it should trigger on any incoming SMS. If that works, check out the pattern matching part of the Tasker documentation to see if that's where your problem lies.

Not quite sure what you mean by that, data must be enabled in the android ui?

OK I tried this, put on an extended vibrate after receiving the special text and it didn't execute the vibration...which means the profile didn't activate. I would be very dissapointed if it is becuse i'm using handcent to manage my text messages...

What should i try now?

In Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile networks, there is a "Data enabled" option. This must be on before Tasker can turn data on or off.

Next thing to try would be to switch back to the stock messaging app and see if that fixes the problem. It's not a solution, but it will help find where the problem lies.

Found the setting and is/was already enabled

Uninstalled handcent and tried with the stock message app, still didn't activate the profile.

I wonder if it's because i'm using a non-rooted stock htc sense rom...

I have no idea why it is not working for you, it looks like it should work, maybe try changing the event priority to normal. With what you are trying to do root should not matter.

Tried changing the event and no luck.

You don't think rooting my phone would help?

I think I am using an o2 branded phone, so that could be preventing the app from using special permissions?

you could try setting a variable on the receipt of the SMS so

when a sms is received (you could just leave it as any sms to start with and then put in particular contents / senders once this bit is working) set %secretsms to 1

Then set up a separate profile based on Variable Value (%secretsms matches 1) to have mobile data and gps turning on.

There are 2 mobile networks within Net I think the Mobile data (not APN) should work. You could try both though...

Oh one other thought make sure during testing you are not connected to wifi - I don't think 3G will turn on if you are (that's an android thing not tasker)

I don't think rooting would assist in this situation

Not quite sure i understand your instructions, could you be a bit more clearer (im a bit of a tasker noob) thanks

First profile should be
Context: Event: SMS received
Action: Variable: Variable set %secretsms to 1

Second profile
Context: Event: Variable Set %secretsms value 1
Action: Net: Mobile Data on
Action: Misc: GPS on
Action: Variable: Variable Clear %secretsms

Try this see if it works without using the secret code SMS just any. If it does work then try adding the secret password into the context of the first profile

Hmm still no luck, clicking the test button on on the task in first profile didn't even work either. Here is what i've done

Profile: Gps (2)
Event: Received Text
Enter: Secret (4)
A1: Variable Set [ Name:%secretsms To:1 Do Maths:Off Append:Off ]

Profile: 1 (6)
Event: Variable Set
Enter: Gps (3)
A1: GPS [ Set:On ]
A2: Mobile Data APN [ Enable:On Keep MMS:Off Notify:Off ]
A3: Vibrate [ Time:941 ]
A4: Mobile Data [ Set:On ]
A5: Variable Clear [ Name:%secretsms ]

I've tried the different data toggles and thought I would try with both of them in and enabled but still no luck.

Change the first profile to this

Profile: Gps (2)
Event: Received Text
Enter: Secret (4)
A1: Variable Set [ Name:%secretsms To:1 Do Maths:Off Append:Off ]
A2: Alert: Flash %secretsms
A3: Variable clear %secretsms

Run this twice to make sure it is setting the variable as 1, at the end of each run it should put up a # on the lower center of your screen it should be 1 each time, if so then the error is happening somewhere in the 2nd profile.

If this works please let me know and remove the A2 and A3 from the profile as it is not needed

Yup that worked, in that case as you said the error is in the 2nd profile

If you test this task does it work? If not try using Mobile Data APN or Mobile Data but not both (grasping at straws a bit you never know!)

Also check the spelling of the variable set that kicks off this profile (sorry to suggest this but it's caught me out before!)

No worries, it does happen lol. Checked the spelling of all things inputted on tasker and there is nothing wrong.

Yeah sorry missed the bump...

I agree with staffsmatt, try removing the mobile data APN action.

No probs. Tried with just one data toggle and still no luck.

I am starting to think it is because of I'm using an o2 branded phone, they may have locked down certain things?

Hi Guys,

The Display On/Off is not working properly in Samsung Galaxy S2. I've been using this Event in my context seamlessly in my HTC Desire Z.

To tested this in SGS2 where I created 2 profiles that gives a notification when the display is on and display is off. The notification gets triggered if you switch the screen off and on quickly, one for display off and another one for display on notification (total of 2 notification). But if you let the phone sit for a while, like a few minutes after turning the screen off, before switching the display back on (power button) you will never get the notification for the event of display off. I.e. Tasker didn't detect the event of the screen turning off.

Can anyone help me on this?

Thanks,
Jed
