Help Need help with the android upgrade

Hi, I've a HTC desire with 2.2.2 android version. I would like to upgrade the OS to the latest version and the OS need to be installed in the memory card. I heard about partitioning the memory card. I've not tried it yet. Can you suggest a best practice to upgrade and to make the memory card as the primary slot to install apps and the OS upgrade to the latest version?

I recommend you read through the topics in the "root guide" thread in the "all things root section" of the Desire forum (see subsections above).

When you say you want the latest os upgrade what do you mean? The latest official upgrade was to 2.3 but there are some Android 4 ROMs available. However the Desire hardware isn't ideal for those ROMs. I can recommend some good 2.3 ROMs depending on your needs.

The post Nicka recommends you read is here: http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/503471-desire-all-things-root-guide.html

You don't mention root at all, but if you want to upgrade to anything other than the official 2.3 then that's what you need to look at. Within that thread I'd at least read the rooting FAQ, the root memory guide, and the guide to rooting using Revolutionary. Read them a few times, and if there is anything you don't understand after that do ask before proceeding (it's best to understand what you are doing rather than type stuff blindly). Revolutionary would be the rooting tool of choice. For partitioning, either GParted (described in the root memory FAQ) or 4Ext recovery are recommended.

If you do not wish to root, the newest official ROM can be found at shipped-ROMs: HTC_Desire_Android_2.3_Upgrade.zip. Unzip that an you'll find a ROM Upgrade Utility in it - a Windows executable that can be used to upgrade to 2.3. This will do a factory reset in the process, so back up anything important first. There is a trick to make the SD card the default app install location without root (and without a partition), or you can move apps manually without root.

Note that whether you wish to root or not, if you like HTC Sense then you won't be able to use an android version newer than 2.3 - no Android 4 Sense ROMs have been ported to the Desire.

Good luck, and if you are unsure do ask before proceeding - preventing problems is better than fixing them.

Thank you guys for your suggestions. I've to decide which way I'm going for the upgrade. What will be the best way to back up my contacts if i'm going with anyone one of these? I'm only concerned about the contacts and nothing much from my phone.

If they are stored as Google contacts then they are already backed up to your GMail account (as long as you have syncing enabled).

A simple way of backing up is to just "export" your address book to SD (from the phonebook view, press menu then select the export option). That lets you have your contacts as a vcard file on the SD card.

Remember that partitioning a card will erase the data on it, so you need to back up everything off that first if you partition.

If you tell us a little about why you want to upgrade we may be able to steer you towards a few of the many options. If you want more storage for apps etc then rooting would be the way to go.

Thanks Hadron for you recommendation.

@ Nicka : I'm upgrading for more space for apps and to use the latest apps. Here I've another question about using apps, If I upgrade to 2.3 the official upgrade does it support all the latest apps?

Please edit your post to spell my name correctly! ;)

"All" the latest apps? No. Some apps require later OS versions. Some won't run on the Desire whatever OS it is running. But most still run on GB.

If you are after more space then rooting gives you more options. The move to sd is more powerful in 2.3 than 2.2 (moves more of the app), but how much difference that makes depends on the app.

A rooted gingerbread ROM that supports apps to ext sd partition will probably suit you best. You'll need to decide whether you like HTC sense or not as there is a vast array of such ROMs available for the Desire.
