i just installed kies on my laptop, and I have to update my phone on it.
it says i have to backup my contacts and stuff. Do i have to?. because i don't know how.

No you don't have to, but why wouldn't you want to back them up if your planning on updating your phones firmware.

When kies ask you if you want to backup just click Yes and follow the instructions.

It's always a very good idea to back up everything, contacts, photos, music ect before a firmware update as this could wipe them from the phone.

Why not set your contacts to google and sync them to your google account, that way you will always have them when you need them.
