Root Need rooting advice

I haven't rooted an android device in ages and am currently thinking about rooting my phone. I had heard that Razr HD phones on android 4.1.2. cannot be rooted and the owner needs to downgrade to ICS in order to root. Is this still the case?

My phone:
System Version: 9.16.6.XT926.Verizon.en.US
Model Number: Droid Razr HD
Android Version: 4.1.2.
Baseband Version: Vanquish_BP_100730.081.64.09P
Build Number: 9.8.1Q-62_VQW_MR-2

If this phone is rootable, without downgrading, which method do I use? After rooting, can I use any ROM made for this phone or are the choices limited because I'm on 4.2.1?

Anything else I need to research/worry about?

You're good to go.

I personally haven't run the exploit since I did the old method, but it works. You can use any ROM that isn't designed for the unlocked bootloader. That would be stated in the OP. Essentially if it's Android 4.2.2, then it's a no go for you. But everything else will be alright.

You'll also need to install and download safestrap to use a ROM.

Goo.im Downloads - Downloading RAZR-HD-Safestrap-3.12.apk

That link will take you straight to the download page. Install it after you've rooted, and open up the app and hit install recovery. From now on when you reboot, it will have the safestrap splash screen. It won't interfere with your phone's normal usage or anything, it will just give you another screen to navigate. You can install ROMs on ROM slots through safestrap, so you can keep your stock ROM as well.

Hope that answers what you needed without being too confusing. I tried to condense all the info into something quicker to read, so lemme know if you need more help.

Not confusing at all, that was perfect. Thank you :)
Whew, I won't have to downgrade to ICS, that's a load off my mind - I suffer from lazyitis.
