Hey there, I recently got my first Android phone (xperia x10). I have a few questions..some of them sound stupid, sorry

1) If I were to download a widget (such as a clock app, twidroyd, etc) and placed it onto one of my panels, would I get charged for having it on there when I'm not using wifi?

2) I just got a warning text from ATT that I've over exceeded a certain amount due to data charges, ugh. Is there anyway around to avoiding those charges when downloading free apps?

3) Is it possible to download apps to your computer and then transferring them to your phone?

4) What happens when you're on wifi using messaging programs (skype, msn, ebuddy, etc) but had to leave that hotspot? Should signing off be suffice to avoid any charges made? What about when you're on the internet browsing through websites? Facebook, gmail?

5) I've read that wifi turns off once your phone goes to "sleep"..is that true?

thanks guys

Welcome to the forum!

1) Depends if the widget requires data or not. If it does and your not in a wifi area, Yes, you will be charged by your carrier if you dont have a data plan. You can turn off data by going to: Settings>>Wireless & Networks>>Mobile Networks>> Untick data traffic.

2) Dont quite understand what you mean, But to keep track of your data usage, you could download a app called "3g watchdog" Not sure how accurate it is. You could read the comments and see what other users experiences are. (3G watchdog is Free)

3) Yes, There are websites that allow you to download apps (.apk files) e.g: androidapps.com, to your computer, and install them on your device. (Not sure how safe they are) Then use an app like "appinstaller" to install the .apk file. (Appinstaller is available on the market - free)

4) Again, Once you leave a hotspot or your home. I recommend turning data off just to be sure. If you havent got a data plan.

5) Yes it does, That is the default setting, depending on your chosen setting, you can change the setting by: Settings>>Wireless & Network>>Wi-Fi settings>>Press the menu button (left hand button)>>Advanced>>Wi-fi sleep policy>> Then you can change it to your liking. E.g: Never sleep.

Hope this helps
