Could someone point me in the direction of good posts that explain 1)froyo 2)rom's 3)rooting your phone (snigger snigger i am an aussie after all and is really funny when you tell someone you want to root your phone to get access to its root files and they get this look on their face...... you have to be there) 4)an app to really personalize all my sounds. ps am i right in thinking that one of the most sophisticated phones on the market only has 1 notification tone on it. Even many simpler phones have multiple tone settings on them. any info would really be appreciated. Just point me towards good forums, you dont have to explain the terms to me.

Hi Londo :) Welcome to AndroidForum. I made your post into a thread since it didn't really relate to what the thread you posted it in.

Each version of Android OS platform is given a dessert code name. And every new version adds features to the current OS. We are currently on 2.3 for smartphones and 3.0 for tablets.
1.5=Cupcake released Apr 2009
1.6=Donut
2.0=Eclaire(v1) released Oct 2009
2.1=Eclaire(v2) released Jan 2010 (Nexus One)
2.2=Froyo released Jun 2010
2.3=Gingerbread released Dec 2010 (Nexus S)
3.0=Honeycomb released Mar 2011 (Xoom)

I'll get you started on Root: http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/221212-faq-rooting-updated-14-03-11-a.html
Rooting - is it for me? Some Q&A | Android Central
Should I root my phone? | Android Central

Android Security: Android, security, and you | Android Central

As ROMs are phone specific, you'd need to ask that in your phone forum: Samsung Vibrant - Android Forums

Enjoy your Anroid phone and your stay here on AndroidForums :)

Cheers,

If it is NOT 40,000 - ignore the rest of this section.

If it IS 40,000 you need to use the latest Amon-RA recovery image (rather than the standard supplied) with unrevoked when rooting. Use Unrevoked 3.21 if you can.

You can get it here:
[Recovery] [14-Nov-2010] RA-desire-v2.0.0 [GSM] - xda-developers However, 2.0.1 is deemed to be better (Thanks @Rastaman-FB). This is a test image, available HERE

When using unrEVOked, whilst it is on the "Waiting for device" screen, go to FILE > Custom recovery - Choose the Amon-RA image you downloaded.

If you want Clockworkmod recovery, once rooted and flashed Amon RA, if you run the latest Alpharev S-OFF, you can flash clockworkmod recovery using that

AlphaRev 1.8

^--yeah...rooting is a pain. Just read EVERYTHING so that you have an understanding of EVERYTHING before you Root :) Some phones have the one click root (I don't remember the app, lol), which makes rooting easier :)

If you read something you don't understand, ask the community :)

Yes and no.

There's only one system notification (set via Settings->Audio) but your apps can all have their own notification tones. You'd need to check the settings for each app to set each app's notification tone though.
