Root need some help connecting usb

Alright, I need some help. My cousin wants me to root her phone. She has the same Samsung Prevail I do (mine is rooted and so is my other cousins, both of which I did) But my problem is I can not connect it to the usb to make a back up. On my phone I had to go under settings to change the default action to usb connection, but I can not seen to find the option to do that with hers. I know I could go ahead and do it but I don't want her to lose all of her stuff, She's only 14. Please, any heads up??????

If you're having problems with USB, you can try using the app AirDroid. This will allow you to transfer data thru your WiFi (or tether).

When I plug my prevail into my computer I get a usb symbol in my notification bar when I drag down the notification menu and select the usb notice o get the options you are speakimg of

I know, that's the issue I'm faced with now. I'm getting her back here tomorrow to try to connect to the pc again. I've already got the drivers, I even reinstalled them again to make sure they were the same. Is there some other kinda trick that I don't get? haha But naw, seriously, what should I do?

It's not giving me any option at all, just charging. It's kinda like before I finally bought a data cable, when I was trying to connect my phone with the flimsy charging cable but I know my data cable is good, I got to backup her stuff on her sd card through my phone.

:hmmmm: These smilies are really cute btw. Lol Sorry, I know, I'm quirky....

Didn't you say : My cousin wants me to root her phone

You cannot use AirDroid for rooting !!!!!

You need a Windows PC, USB and ODIN !!!!

I did say that, I just can't find a reason why her phone won't connect to pc. I thought I'd ask yall if yall knew a way to do it in this situation. Also, I'm still a newbie, so please forgive me if I often have stupid questions, I kinda specialize in them. :o

That was not at you personally......... but someone suggested AirDroid.... And since you wanna root, that wont work....

There are no "stupid" questions here...... we all started out this way !!! ;)

Check your Windows device Manager and select "Show Hidden Devices"...... There are maybe lots of entries under USB, delete them all, then restart your PC and let them re-detect the USB ports. Then try again.....

Also, check on the phone : "Settings>>>>Applications>>>>Development >>> USB debugging" NEEDS to be checked !!

Let us know...........

Oh, naw, that's fine, I didn't take anything into offense, just responding honestly. :) But I figured the debugging would make the option appear but still nothing, then it took me forever to remember where the usb connection was, but found it, changed the option to mass storage and still nothing, just like I plugged it into a charger. Makes no sense to me.

Try the device manager USB removal thingy I suggested......, then, re-install the Samsung drivers :

64-bit : http://db.tt/IlIkQ4BV
32-bit : http://db.tt/eGN4acLK

Then connect your phone again.... If that still doesn't help, maybe your cable IS bad or something on the connectors of the phone.......... I think LV has a "dollar bill" trick for "connector fixing" that he might can explain to you......

Well, once again, a dumb question that I ought to know then, I'm running XP, whis is that? 64 or 32? I'm shaking my head at myself while I'm writing this. I just use the computer, that's about it now. Haha :o

And I will ask him about that in just a second. Thanks.

It depends if your Windows is a 32-bit or 64-bit operating system....,. However most Win XP are 32-bit. Right click on "MY COMPUTER" and go to "Properties" and it will tell you...,.,, But My guess is that you need the 32-bit drivers

Just install the 32-bit drivers, it should be fine. Most XP's are 32-bit.....

But if you would like to be absolutely sure :

View the System Information window
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. Type winmsd.exe, and then click OK.
  3. When System Summary is selected in the navigation pane, locate Processor under Item in the details pane. Note the value.
    • If the value that corresponds to Processor starts with x86, the computer is running a 32-bit version of Windows.
    • If the value that corresponds to Processor starts with IA-64 or AMD64, the computer is running a 64-bit version of Windows.
