Need some help with default icon

I have handcent and when i click on my message icon, it asked me what I wanted to set as a default. I don't believe i clicked anything and went about my business.
I read that if I set my handcent as my defualt, when I click my message icon, it will bring up handcent.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling to get that box to pop up, but it won't. What do I need to do so that i can access my handcent through my message icon?

I appreciate your help.

I think you misunderstood. If you set Handcent as your default messaging app, when you click on the message notification it should launch Handcent. The messaging icon on the home screen is just a shortcut. Delete it and put a Handcent shortcut in its place.

I did create shortcut to Handcent but when I get a sms it doesn't display on the icon, only on the information bar. It does display on the icon if I create a widget. My only problem with that is that the widget isn't in the grey box like all the other homescreen icons. I know it's being picky but I like everything to look the same.
Do you have a suggestion on how to fix that?

Yeah, get an iPhone (sorry, couldn't resist)

Unless Handcent offers a 1x1 widget, i don't think there is a solution.

When you create a shortcut, it gives you an icon that looks to be in a gray box. It's the icon you can place anywhere on your homescreen. Not the notifcation bar.
