Need some help with verizon

First off all, hi everyone.

Second of all I asked this in another forum and not one reply so I thought I would give you guys a try.

I'm wanting to upgrade and keep my unlimited data.

A little background I've been reading up on this thru google and there's a lot of inconsistencies some say it works and some say it doesn't I'm so confused that I'm frustrated so I joined this forum this morning for some help.

Here's the deal I've always had one line and still have the family share unlimited data plan. I'm due for an upgrade on my primary line but I'm not ready to give up my unlimited until its forced. So here goes my questions. I get the gist of how this loop hole works but here's where I'm lost. Ok so I add a new line with a GS4 then I activate it with a minimum data plan come home and activate a dumb phone on the new line, here's the problem I don't have a dumb phone last dumb phone I had was when Cingular was still in business. So how do I do this without another phone to activate on the new line? I've read somewhere about a ghost phone esn but again some say yay some say nay. And I know this should all be done online but I'm kind of on a time crunch and will be leaving the state to work for a few months and would like to pick up a new phone before I leave. So can I do this thru best buy or are they getting wise to the scam?

Thanks for the help.

And just one more off the subject question. If I did goto a share everything plan could I add a new line a year after I signed a new tiered plan so I could have an upgrade every year rather than every two.. I've never been the type to get two years out of a phone..

Hi kbi83. I wish I had an answer for you. I'm with Verizon and recently gave up my unlimited for a shared plan. However, I was adding two phones at the time and so far with four sharing we are happy. With that being said, we likely have a better area for your question. I want you to get a definitive answer and I'm betting the folks that hang out in the Verizon discussion area will know what you can and can't do. I'll move your thread over there and I wish you lots of luck. I also hope you enjoy these forums and will continue to use the site for all of your questions. And... if you get that S4, have fun my friend.

At this point the loophole has been closed. The only way to get a new phone and keep your unlimited data is to pay full cash value for the phone. And I'm sure they're going to somehow close that loophole someday soon as well.

I did a lot of research last night and it was around 60/40 60% were still getting it to work... Dang it. I've already bought two phones at full retail to keep the unlimited. I did see that you can do a payment plan now which I guess that's an option.

I suppose it might depend on where you are. No one around here has been able to get it done. I paid full price for my last phone. Next one will cause me to go over to tiered data plan. Or maybe just to another carrier altogether. Time well tell. Let us know if you get it done.

I do not know if it still works, but 3 months ago I "upgraded" with a pre-owned phone and kept unlimited. They might have closed that loophole also

I have a smartphone (on unlimited) and 2 dumbphones. One of the dumbphones was due an upgrade. I bought an s4 at discounted price against the dumbphone, it was activated briefly against the dumbphone line, and they transfered over to the smartphone line. The dumbphone was reactivated on the same line and the only thing that changed was that I had a 2-yr commitment against the dumbphone line. This all happened in the Verizon store, and I had two reps that were working hard to make it happen.

This post also talks about another variation of doing it...

If none of the above had worked for me, I would have kept my unlimited by buying the phone at full price and financing over 12 months through Verizon...

It's seems everyone that has done this has previously owned a "dumb phone" I don't have any vzw "dumb phones so in order for this to work I'd have to have a spare phone to put their extra service on. The oldest vzw phone I have is a Motorola droid and it still pulls data. So I'm asking as anyone done this without a physical dumb phone?

If you read my post, I have upgraded a smart phone line and kept unlimited.

The Story: I had a Moto Droid X2, it had a hard key malfunction and kept on booting into safe mode... 3 days out of the manufacturer warranty. My only option was to "upgrade" and to keep unlimited, the person over the phone told me if I got a "pre-owned" phone it would keep my unlimited plan. 3 months later I am still using 30GB+ a month and all is gravy.

I got mine off ebay for $10 or so. Just an old beat up flip phone. :)

They sell ghost lines on eBay for $5. I bought one by accident because the first phase in the ad was "Verizon Unlimited Data..." and the next part was "Ghost line to keep unlimited"

I purchased an unlimited plan off eBay, and to turn my old plan into a dumb phone plan to ride out the contract I just used a broken flip phone from '08. It doesn't even need to be able to turn on, as long as you can read the ESN on it.
I didn't know the dumb phone didn't need to be operational so I ordered a charger from Asia. Remember when every single cell phone had a different charger? Yeah, this phone needed one of those that isn't being produced anymore. And when I called to put the dumb phone on my old line, the rep says, "oh you don't need to turn it on" ohmergawd!!!!! So angry for wasting like $50 on a charger I didn't even need!
